“Sohphisticated elegance, outstanding breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2009

Booked at the last minute over the Labor Day weekend, we weren't expecting a lot, but this B & B was excellent in many ways. First, our room, the least expensive of the three there, was spacious, immaculately clean and more than almost any we have seen, well-laid out with all of the most important items both attractive and very usable: the bed, bathroom and linens, seating, WiFi, etc.

The breakfast was not only delicious, but probably the most elaborate presentation we've seen at any B & B. It would not have been out of place at an elite restaurant.

If anything keeps Harbor View from being 5 stars across the board, it's the location. It's a few blocks out of the center of Newcastle / Damariscota, and is on an arterial roadway. This wasn't a problem for us, but might be for a light sleeper.

“Good, solid accomodations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2009

I want to start by saying that our stay at The Harbor View Inn was comfortable and pleasant. No real complaints about the inn, but rated it with 3 stars, based on experience at many other B&Bs over the years.

We were greeted by Joe, the innkeeper and escorted into the living room for a chat. Unbeknownst to Joe, we were under some time pressure and really wanted to unload the car, see the room, freshen up a bit, and get to our event. Instead, we felt obligated to sit and chat for a while. On any other occasion, this would have been fine. In our case, it was a bit of an intrusion.... not a big deal.

The room was very comfortable - gas powered fireplace on a timer, to cozy up the room while falling asleep, or warming it up a bit on a chilly morning. Bed and bedding were comfy, bathroom could have used a bit more counter space for personal toiletries. Soap, shampoo, were provided.

Breakfasts were good, but maybe a bit too formal, served in courses rather than family style, with maybe a basket of muffins on the table rather than one being placed on your bread plate, a bowl of fresh fruit cocktail to serve yourself, rather than a parfait glass brought to your place. Again, not a big deal, but made it impossible to pace the breakfast to your liking, and get on with your day. Food was tasty, though. Breakfast would typically be juice, fruit, waffles/eggs/pancakes (one of these) with breakfast meat, and then some kind of breakfast baked treat - scone, muffin, coffee cake, etc.

Other inns we've been to have had coffee and tea available to guests 24/7, and sometimes even a cookie jar filled with homemade goodies, or a plate of fresh lemon squares (for example) to grab a snack after your day out and about, and as you're headed up to your room. We've always enjoyed that at other inns, and think some set-up like this would add some warmth to the Harbor View.

Easy on/off Coatal Route 1, so very conveniently located. Satellite TV and WiFi both worked well.
