“Quiet Maine Retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2011

Stayed with a great friend in the main house. It was a last minute stay and we were lucky they had space - next time would love to try one of the outer buildings. But the main house was quiet, and nicely furnished - very country farmhouse. We had sweet potato waffles for breakfast which were wonderful! Wish we could have stayed more than one night, but were headed down the coast.

Room Tip: Book ahead, we just dropped in!

“Dated rooms, not so good breakfast...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011 via mobile

Rooms were dated, breakfast was frozen, limited and not filling. The breakfast room is tiny. My closet is bigger than their breakfast room. If you ask for second helping or any extra item, you will get no response or they will say 'let me see' but won't return for next 15 mins. The staff was rude and didn't make you feel welcome to their b&b.

Do no recommend this b&b.

To whom it may concern:
I am very saddened to hear that some of our recent guests were so unhappy with their stay. My father, George Clemens, was our owner and operator until his sudden passing this past winter. My fiance and I both have our own careers but are doing our very best to keep the family business running.
Our dining room is small. We cannot seat all of our guests at one time. However, the 9.5 feet by 16 feet (152 square feet) that we do have does comfortably sit 10 guests at a time. It is a fact of our B&B that sometimes guests do have to wait to be seated, however, we have a very comfortable common room for you to wait in and you certainly can come in and help yourself to coffee, tea, or juice.
I can assure you that the majority of our breakfast items are made fresh on premises. Any pastry served is made from scratch in our kitchen by either myself or our chef. All entrees served are made to order from fresh ingredients with the exception of the broccoli for our omelets; and we do not make our own bacon or sausage, those are ordered frozen.
As for my staff being rude, I apologize. I have spoken to everyone and hopefully no one will experience anything like that in the future. I know it is not an excuse but I do want to make people aware that Mainers have a very dry sense of humor. It would not be uncommon to have someone make a request and a local reply “I guess… but its gonna cost you”, this is humor, the local is not intending to be rude, it is just how we interact here, right or wrong. Again, I have spoken to my staff and warned them to not use local humor as it may not be understood by all that visit.
Again, I am saddened and sorry that we have recently disappointed some of our guests. I specifically, but also the rest of my staff, will do everything we can to avoid anyone else having a similar experience. Thank you for your time.

“A friendly place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

I stayed there with a group of friends on a trip to visit the house of the world-known writer Marguerite Yourcenar. The service was courteous and good, quite good actually because the daughter of the recently deceased owner took over. The young lady was nice enough that it compensated for her lack of experience. The breakfast was good. We fell asleep listening to the frogs in the pond having their nightly conversation. The jacuzzi in my room was a plus. A suggestion: they could make their sign bigger so drivers see it easily. Now it's half hidden behind a tree.

“attractive and peaceful place - shame about the breakfasts”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

On the positive side, the setting is peaceful and attractive: lots of open space, a pond filled with frogs, a rope swing off an old tree. I thought our room (in the Pond House) was spacious and furnished with attention to detail, including seaside themed decor, a four-poster bed and it even had a jacuzzi. Unlike some reviewers I found the location to be a definite pro: Bar Harbor in the summer is a tourist hell full of typical seaside touristy tat, and I much prefered being a bit away from it. It's also close to South West and North East harbors (much nicer and less tacky than Bar Harbor) which have good dining options, and it has easy access to attractive hikes and bits of the island that aren't as crowded as the main part of the park.
The main negative for me was the quality of breakfast. Everything seemed to come out of a tin (even the fruit salad), and even things that were home-cooked (e.g. omelettte) just weren't very good. We stayed here four nights and only on one occasion was the breakfast an adequate standard. Since one of the reasons to choose B&B rather than hotel acommodation is to have a nice homecooked meal, this was a disappointment.

Our chef is professionally trained and does her very best to meet all of our customers requests. I am sorry that she disappointed some of our travelers, but I know she is doing her very best.

“Disappointed, Won't go back again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2011

We (me, husband and 1 yr old daughter) stayed at the Collier House for one night last weekend along with another couple. We had booked the Creek Retreat suite for ourselves and our friends booked the couples room. The Creek Retreat suite itself was nice and clean, but not worth the $169 that we paid for it.
But, we were disappointed by the unfriendliness of the staff and the breakfast (think it was frozen and not fresh) next day. My daughter who loves to eat everything, just spit out the pancakes and was not willing to eat another bite. Eventually we asked the owner / server to warm up a little milk for our daughter (around 2 oz milk only for 30 seconds). The owner / server made a face and told us she will see if they can do it for us. I was made to feel as if this was extra work and we were being an unnecessary pain to them. The server bought us the warmed milk after 10 minutes, which we fed to the baby.

Later while checking out of the B&B, the staff charged us extra $20 bucks for the baby citing the reason that they had to warm milk for her.

Overall, I am very disappointed with the staff and service and will not be recommending this B&B to anyobe.

As stated on the rates page of our webpage, all rates are based on double occupancy. For the three rooms that can accommodate a maximum of four people, there is a $20.00 charge per person beyond the first two guests. When someone makes a reservation for a party of 3 and then arrives with a party of 4 they will be charged the extra $20.00. There are no exceptions and I am sorry that one particular guest felt there should be an exception.
