This inn has been in the same family for 40 years. It is a gem. Hidden away in the woods just off The Golden Road, it has good, clean rooms, a nice clientele and a very good bar and dining room. The food was very good. This is a real keeper and we'll be back.

We have been up Katahdin several times and always stay at the Big Moose Inn. Sometimes in cabins, sometimes in the inn. If you want Abercrombie and Fitch, this ain't it, but the site is great, staff is accommodating, North Country Rivers is a step out the front door, and a sea plane is across the street. Found the best meals are at River Drivers, but that's a half hour back into Millinocket (but moving restaurant to their ops on Lake Millinocket). This is more of a family place, so if you want to be rowdy, move on down the road.

Les Peridots

My husband and I stayed in Room #1 at the inn for 2 nights while we did a rafting trip on the Penobscot River. The rafting company, North Country Rivers, operates right next door so it was quite convenient. Debbie, at the front desk, was very helpful. Actually, we found all the staff to be very accommodating. We didn't realize the Inn has no cell service and needed to speak to our children and we were able to receive a call to the inn's phone. You can also drive a mile up the road for wireless service.

The pub food was surprisingly good, whereas the fancier restaurant was slightly disappointing when it came to the entrees.

Our room was neat, clean and quiet. And if you are rafting, its rather convenient.

I stayed at the Big Moose for two nights while on a birding trip to Baxter State Park. I found it to be a charming, rather old fashioned place, perfectly comfortable and extremely convenient to the Katahdin area. The Inn is right on Millinocket Lake. My room was small but quiet, and imaginatively decorated. The staff is friendly and very helpful. And the two dinners I had were imaginative, tasty and reasonable priced. I would certainly stay at the Big Moose again.
