“Pretty Good Value, Some Issues”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

We stayed the week before Labor Day. We reserved a cottage so we'd have plenty of room. The furnishings are quite old but clean and sufficient -- I'd guess dating from the late 1980's or so. The mattress was firm, so that was good. The cottage had a small window air conditioner, and it was ancient, but helped us have a comfortable night along with a ceiling fan, during a very unusual heat wave in Maine. It was so hot, it was miserable outdoors during the day -- the only relief was to get into the water, or sit at the top of Mt Beattie in the shade, and pray for a breeze. The bathroom had old fixtures that needed replacing and there was a water problem -- the owner told us they had to shut the water off from the well in order to sanitize it due to state regulations. It resulted in the water being brown and brackish during our stay. We could not drink it for sure and we used our bottled water to wash our toothbrushes. The owners should have provided bottle water, in our opinion, but did not. This appears to be owned by a hardworking couple who are trying to make ends meet and they work the entire place on their own. The main issue that spoiled our stay was that the checkout time is 10am! Have you ever heard of a 10am checkout? We requested an extra hour and the owner's wife told us no, as she said she cleans all the rooms herself. We needed an hour to go to the beach right down the street, and wanted to shower in our room afterwards before leaving. Up until then, the stay was decent, tho on the shabby side, but her attitude was so curt that is what caused us to decide we would not stay here again even tho we travel to Maine once or twice a year.

“A bargain at twice the price”

What a great little motel. I was concerned about staying at a motel with such a reasonable rate, but this motel would be a bargain at twice the price! As a retired inspector, I've seen many hotel/motels and this one is a gem. The grounds are meticulously groomed, the rooms immaculate and the owners are friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. Spend a few days at the Ducktrap Motel, you won't be disappointed!!

“Great place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

just north of Camden, Me. a bit hard to find in the dark, but the owners were helpful in guiding us in. the grounds are well kept, the rooms are also kept neat & clean. bathroom is a bit small, but it works. water is soft (owners are green conscious).
outdoor lights remain on for other guests arriving later in the evening, but do go off.
great place to relax & enjoy the Maine lifestyle - as it should be, nice & slow.

“Even better the second time around!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

Having previously stayed here last September in one of the wonderful rooms, we decided to book the cottage for 3 nights this trip. With a cute living/kitchen area and a separate bedroom we had more than enough space. The kitchen was stocked with more than enough dishes, coffee mugs, pots and pans etc. Not that I wanted to cook - but it was nice to have it available! Sitting out on the porch in the evening with a glass of wine or coffee in the morning was a great way to begin and end the day.
The property inside and out is always clean and the grounds are just beautiful. You can see that Rick and Elaine invest alot of time and effort into the upkeep of this gem. There are alot of lodging choices in the area, but we keep comming back to this one - reasonable rates, good location without the noise and confusion of downtown Camden - but minutes away. We hope to be back in the spring!

“Sweet little motel with a parking problem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

This small family-run hotel is neat as a pin and set back from the road so as to be quiet as can be. While not dirt cheap, it's affordable in a area that can be quite pricey in high season.

I encountered the slippery tub problem mentioned by another poster and am guessing that perhaps there is very soft water in the area and that's the problem. (FWIW, you really must stand in the tub/use it as a shower, as it's very tiny/not a full-sized tub/not conducive to a sit-down bath.) I also wish the bathroom light didn't also contain a fan as the fan drowned out the sound of the tv in the room. So, I couldn't listen to the news when I was at the sink.

My only real complaint is that parking is not accommodating to patrons, and I post here hoping the owners will see this and do something to address the problem. The establishment is comprised of one long single-story strip of rooms, and then a few free-standing cabins. The parking for all the rooms is concentrated at one end of the "strip" making it very convenient to the few rooms at the end close to the parking area, but an increasing walk from the rest of the rooms. Imagine if you're mobility impaired or traveling with small children and have to make repeated trips to your vehicle. It becomes a hardship.

Furthermore, there apparently aren't enough spaces for a "full house" unless everyone parks tightly. Parking spaces are not lined in paint, and if the patrons who park first do not line their cars up close to one another then there won't be spaces left for folks who come in later, after the office is closed. At that point your options are to park behind someone else (blocking them in) or to park on the nicely manicured lawn, which of course you don't want to do because the lawn is obviously very well cared for.

Seems like the owners could 1. paint some stripes on the blacktop parking area in order to direct how people line up/insure that everyone will have a space 2. Add some more parking. If I were the owner I would pave a parking lane/access road in front of the one-story line of rooms so that all patrons could park at the doors of their units. Seems like a no-brainer solution.
