“QUIRKY, FUN & ROMANTIC - THOUGH A LITTLE PRICEY.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2010

My wife and i stayed here for the first time in mid-august. Now, i know it's kittery and that prices are high, so expect to pay a few extra bucks to spend a night anywhere. And even though i feel like i should have received more for my money - like a real shower for example, or maybe a cheap bottle of bubbly in the room - we still both agreed that we loved this place! The building itself looks like a jolly castle, too! :)

We spent the night in the "princess room", which is indeed fit for a princess... (well, maybe a quirky princess (who doesn't mind sitting down in a vintage claw-foot tub, to attach a shower hose for a rinse-down!!). The room is definitely different. We had to chuckle at all the ornaments, pictures, teddy bears, etc, etc, etc...! Overall, the room was fun.

(note: when we perused the area on our 3rd floor level, we got to see "the turret" room. If i get to stay there again, this is the room i'd pick - it was beautiful! I should mention that the rooms were all very clean.)

Breakfast the next morning was great. We were served apple turnovers with tea & coffee, then they brought out a broccoli & garlic scramble with vegetarian sausage, which was very good!! The coffee was plentiful - nice & strong, too!

Service from the owners was relaxing and pleasant, respecting our peace & quiet and coming out only to bring us more food & coffee.

Overall, a fun experience, even if a little too pricey. And personally, i'd stay there for more than one night, if given the chance and money.

So, if you can handle quirky, romantic elegance with something different thrown into the mix, then check this place out. I'd recommend to anyone who can tap into the fun side of their lives!

“Quirky!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2010

We stayed for one night here before our return trip to the UK. I wish we had stayed another night. We had a two rooms with double beds in both, a fridge, microwave (no coffee maker). All the bedding and towels match in with the olde worlde decor, a great place to stay.

The rooms are very 'quirky' bordering on the elaborate. There are so many antiques etc. in this place and it is really clean (I wouldn't like to clean all the nic nacs!!) and we would certainly visit again if in this area.

Peter the owner is very friendly but we only met Nancy for a short while. We also met the one eyed cat.

The coffee was superb but as Peter and Nancy are veggie they don't serve real meat with breakfast, this is my only negative comment, the apple turnovers were great.

The nearby town of Portsmouth is very busy so the nightlife is gret if that is what you are looking for. We Weren't, we just wanted to find a restaurant that served a good steak dinner (we couldn't find one).

“There are MUCH better places down the road.”

My boyfriend and I stayed at Enchanted Nights for our spring break. We weren't really sure what to expect. He said it looked "interesting" from the pictures on the website. Interesting does not begin to cover it. First, the sign is small and crooked. Next, the house is painted in multiple peeling Easter colors. The owner got our arrival time wrong by 2.5 hours. Our room was not ready until 5:30. He was kind of sketchy as well. We only saw him three times over 5 days. The house was cluttered with "save the animals" posters and feline/canine knick knacks. We were led up two dimmly lit stair cases, both extremely creeky. We were led into the Turret room. The moment you walk in there, you are standing in the bathroom, which consisted of a toilet and a 1.5 person shower to the left. To the right was a random pink couch and an ice chamber for wine. Both of the spaces were, combined, 10 feet by 4 feet. Seperating the bathroom from the bedroom was a small pole in a doorway that held about 6 different curtains. The bedroom was about 8 feet in diameter. The sink was in the bedroom. There were about 8 unnecessary night stands in the room, all holding antiques. The bed was comfortable, but it was a full size. There were, once again, random antiques EVERYWHERE. There was no place to put our bags, so we used that hideous pink couch. No fridge. No microwave. The ceiling was cool. It was painted like a daytime sky... blue with small fluffy clouds, with a nighttime sky at the top. Very cramped and low ceilinged in the doorways and the fan was set low, especially for two people over 5'8". The television only had a VHS player and maybe 10 channels. The wireless internet was extremely weak, and we were trying to do homework, unsuccessfully. I ended up going to the Dunkin Donuts down the road for internet. We also, thankfully, skipped breakfast because we sleep in so late. but the "dining room" was creepy as hell. It was a glass table and chairs surrounded by an army of stuffed animals. Holiday Inn and Best Western would have been better options for the same price, and they were only 5 minutes down the road.

“very romantic place in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2010

Really enjoyed our stay in their Bella room, with featured a huge jacuzzi tub right in the room, as well as a fireplace, cathedral ceilings and a beautiful, comfy bed. And we were able to bring the dog along too, which made it convenient. Very close to nearby Portsmouth, but also just walking distance to several great restaurants and shops. Loved it and hope to return soon. Close to beaches too.

“If you can keep your sense of humour...you might just find this entertaining”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2010

We knew when we drove up...the sign tipped slightly, the paint peeling off the house, the objects d'art NOT on the front lawn and porch...that we were not gong to be staying in the most pristine b/b we have ever been in...and when the owner Peter came down the stairs with a sponge and spray bottle in his hand and said "your room is definitely NOT ready" and I dont want to tell you why because you might get mad :) - we knew we were in for a wild ride. And it was. We stayed in Sweet Dreams...hot tub in the room. We have since read many of the reviews and saw comlaints about cleanliness. The room was clean but the amount of Victorian (if you can call it all that) stuff and antiques was so overwhelming - you literally had no where to place even a purse. let alone - your luggage. We were traveling with our small dog - so our options were limited.. This whole experience was quirky...from the lectures we got about what restaurants were putting in food and offering on their menus (that were not PC) to our breakfast(which was meager and not fresh and unappetizing)...the 1/2 bath in our room that we could barely fit in (and i am a small almost anorexic female :) to the lighting fixtures and chandeliers with 10-20 bulb candles (but only 5 had lights)...we spent most of our time laughing - hey, it was clean...we were away on holiday - nothing was going to get us down...so what if we half expected to see Alfred Hitchcock come down the stairs..or norman bates? We had more fun just shaking our heads at the absurdity of the whole ordeal. Would we stay here again? no, we would not. But - we went a bit warily, but also made the decision to stay even though from the outset - it wasnt looking good. We knew from the first impression - knew that we were not going to have the usual b/b experience. If these folks just threw out half of their furniture, changed the lightbulbs and made a breakfast that they could be proud of...they might actually have a niche - with or without the lectures about "people who still eat mammals"..and what they do to geese before they slaughter them to make goose liver pate..(no, i'm not kidding) ..the location was good - at least this time, our room was clean. the owners seemed harmless - just quirky - and they were very willing to give all kinds of suggestions of walks and runs and antique shops etc.. in the area...honestly, the worst place we have ever stayed in - but one we will long remember and laugh about for years to come.
