“Already planning our return trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

My family and i just returned from a 4 day vacation over the christmas break, and we are already scheduling our return for next year.

The skiing was pretty good due to mild weather this season but the kids and I were able to find enough terrain to provide quality skiing. Unfortunately the mild weather prevented them from settingnup terrain parks or moguls just yet.

I will say that the mountain staff, restaurant staff, hotel workers and everyone in between were the absolute friendliest we have ever come across in the northeast ski regions. We were definitely impressed with their friendliness and were made to feel truly welcome. This doesnt always happen at ski resorts so the impression was made.

We stayed at the sugarloaf hotel. Room was well equipped and comfortable. The only downside is there is no pool at the hotel!!!! How cqn that happen at a resort hotel?

We will definitely return and likely for more days next time. Highly recommend as a ski destination

Room Tip: Eat at d'ellies..well worth it!

“Great Ski Mountain, Condo might be great or a dump, research!”

Sugarloaf calls itself the Skiers Mountain and I agree. It's great. I love Whiteface, my home mountain, but wish it had more great fall line trails like Sugarloaf. We had booked a condo in Sugar Tree to be near our group and in the same building as the fitness center. But due to some internal problem the Sugarloaf Condo rental organization bumped us to a different unit and tried to pass it off without my noticing. The unit they sent us to had the bedrooms in the basement level. I was not going to ruin holiday weekend of skiing by sleeping in the cellar! The CSR at the counter was accommodating and bumped us up to a nicer unit which was nicer than we paid for. But if I were a push over and not a negotiator, we would have been stuck in a dump. We stayed ultimately in the Snowbrook section in a 3 BR, 1 bath, and it was very nice with a full and well equiped kitchen. The TV in the bedroom was stupidly small and old for a condo of this value, but we weren't there to watch TV. WIFI was not available there but I heard was available at the fitness center.
The washer/dryer happened to be unlocked and doing one load allowed us to extend out stay and not wear dirty underwear and socks. I agree with the other review. They need a policy to have a working w/d.
One thing we figured out is Sugarloaf condo rentals don't decide which unit they will put you in until just before your arrival. Our friends used cyber rental.com and were happy. But only Sugarloaf condo rentals can discount your lift tickets in combination with the lodging. There is a barbecue restaurant on the access road called the rack. We had the worse barbecue ribs I've ever had and they burned my daughters pizza TWICE! The neighboring table had a pizza that wasn't burned so I guess there also good or bad is a chance you take.
We were unable to use the ski in ski out because they don't run those lifts until too late for our kids ski race schedule and, in early April, there wasn't enough snow to get to the base to load. To ski back would have required taking off the skis to walk over streams, road, mud etc, but I have no doubt in mid winter that is not a problem.
Part of our group was in the Sugar Tree and they liked it. Part of our group was in the Timberwind across the road from Sugar Tree and they were unhappy with their below grade location and didn't want to spend any more time than necessary in it. Another party in our group rented 4 br house for $1500 a night and had a get together there. It was a couple miles up a dirt road in the Sandy Creek Circle, had a muddy driveway, but was really nice and really big and spit between three families was still $500 a night WOW.

“Family Ski Vacation for March Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 March 2008

Our family of 5 together with a second family of 5 shared a 4 bedroom condo at West Wind.
Was a great spot for young kids. Everyone found a place to ski at their skill level, from expert to beginner.
The accomodations were not luxurious but clean and spacious. We loved the washer and dryer in our unit but found the decade old dishwasher to be less than servicable. However, the kitchen was well-equipped and we were able to pick up groceries in Kingfield (20 minute drive) and feed our happy, hungry brood quite easily.
The restaurants on the hill were fine, we particularly like the BAG pizza and hot chocolate.
It was very convenient to be able to ski to the lift to and from the condo and the ski lockers were great.
Overall a great place for an active family to plan a vacation.

“A few tweaks and Sugarloaf could go from "above average" to "excellent"”

We have come to Sugarloaf several times over the years. We & our now teenaged daughters all love the place. Something for everyone--free ski lessons for 19yrs & over, good food and lots of activiites--turbo tubing, rock climbing, swimming, if you have the energy after skiing all day. Skiing in to condo is great--we usually stay in Snowbrook. Only have 2 complaints.
-most units we have had have a washer/dryer but often they are locked up so you can't use them. When you are packing for a week, it makes a huge difference to know if you have a washer/dryer. You could basically take ski equip and one small overnite bag. They should consider taking an additional deposit to ensure the use of these appliances if the owners are worried about them getting broken. Can't understand why anyone with a $100-200k condo would be worried about an apt size washer & dryer anyway but it particularly bugs me when they are locked up. It's insulting. There are laundry facilities on the property but who wants to lug laundry around and run back and forth when you're tired from skiing all day--especially when you know there's one behind the locked door.
--in a 3 bedroom condo, there is only enough hot water for about 2-3 short showers. You have to be up first or you might be having a cold shower.

“It's all about the mountain, not $1K outfits”

We've stayed at Sugarloaf/USA in the winter and summer. The resort's relative isolation from major cities is a god-send for those serious about getting close to a first-class mountain, run by locals who are genuinely down to earth. Conversely, it is probably not the best choice for those who crave a glitsy apres-ski experience. While predominantly known as a ski resort, Sugarloaf also has a stunningly beautiful golf course and a well-run summer kid's day camp, the latter run in conjunction with the town of Carrabassett Valley. I think Sugarloaf's camps (winter and summer) are just as good as the famed Smuggler's Notch ones, but at a fraction of the price. There are also daily summer day tours that range from canoeing to moose-watching. There is a small spa in the Grand Summit Hotel, a larger health club and spa serving the rest of the mountain, as well as the so-called Anti-Gravity Center (shared with Carrabassett Valley Academy) at the resort entrance. The Grand Summit's restaurant is a bit pricey in the evening, but the breakfasts are reasonable. Other recommended restaurants nearby include D'Ellies (on-mountain deli), Hugs (Italian), and The Rack (American).

  • Liked — Great mountain, totally unpretentious staff, excellent value
  • Disliked — Remote location, but that's also an advantage for the committed
  • Tips/Secrets — Hugs, located near the access road, is one of the best Italian restaurants ever
