“A great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

This was a wonderful hotel with exceptional service. The price was fair and the fireplace in our room added to the romantic ambiance. It was cozy, comfortable, and worth an extra day's stay.

Additional tidbits:
Free Parking; short & easy drive to Sugarloaf (hotel provides you with maps, stickers, and more-- if you don't have a car, a Sugarloaf van will meet you in the hotel parking lot to take you there); jacuzzi in room; cute little restaurant right across to the street (plus hotel has a refrigerator for you to store your leftovers and a microwave to heat them back up)

Room Tip: If you are one who gets really hot or really cold at night, you should let the hotel know... They wi...

“An Awful Experience”

We drove 10 hours to visit family in Kingfield and booked this "Grand" Hotel for two nights in late September, 2011. The day we arrived was unseasonably warm. We checked in at 4pm. We did not see the "quaintness" of this hotel. It was old and dingy. There were numerous motorcycles in the parking lot directly below our room. We thought that by the time we returned from visiting the motorcyclists would either be gone or in for the night.
At 10pm we returned to the hotel. The guests had their windows wide open since it was very HOT. There was no air conditioning even though the website touts individually controlled air conditioning and comfortable rooms. We had to use a key to open the front door of the hotel since no staff is available "after hours."
Between the heat and the motorcycles and cars coming and going all night & chatter in the parking lot we did not sleep much at all that night.
At 9am the next morning I advised the hotel desk clerk that we needed to check out since it was unbearable for us to stay another night. She advised me that there are no "cancellations" and therefore I would not be refunded for the 2nd night. I wasn't CANCELLING. We were leaving because of the awful conditions. She advised me that we should have requested a stand up fan because they removed the airconditioners the week before and did not expect the high temperatures. How would I have asked for a stand up fan when no one was available to speak with at 10 pm?
Family we were visiting in Kingfield were in disbelief when we told them of what had occurred. It was an embarrassment to them that we visited their town, stayed at a local hotel, and were treated in such a manner.
We checked out of this hotel, spent the day with family, had our planned dinner with them, and then drove a scary forty minutes hoping & praying we would not encounter any deer or moose on the roads to the town of Wilton where we checked into a beautiful Comfort Inn.

“A True Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

This is an old hotel in the middle of nowhere Maine. It is off the beaten path but WELL worth the trip back in time. The place has a grand old lobby and a great upstairs porch where they serve wine and beer. My buddies and I stumbled upon it while on a ride up to Canada and it was a lot of fun. The price was reasonable--the rooms were clean--the beers were cold---what more could we ask? We will definitely be back.

“Back in Time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

My preference for lodging is a historical inn or bed and breakfast but rarely can I afford to stay in one but no worry about the pocketbook here at the Herbert. I was a guest at a wedding at a farm located in Kingsfield, Maine where the Herbert Grand is located. This venue was chosen for out of town guest for the proximity to the farm plus a welcome reception of held at the hotel on Friday night. Traditionally the Herbert does host a happy hour for guest on Friday nights; the wedding's after rehersal dinner was held in the lobby and a function room directly off the lobby.

The hotel is located in the center of Kingfield which is a small Maine town but you will find an affordable restaurant, Longfellow's across the street and so lovely stores all around. If you want luxury, this hotel is definite not for you but a trip back in time and an extremely friendly staff makes this hotel a great value

Room Tip: request a suite when travelling with a family or for a girls weekend...they were the best decorated...

“Beautiful old building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

The Herbert Grand is a wonderful old building. The veranda is a great spot to sit and relax. Our stay was very comfortable. This is not a luxurious hotel, but if you appreciate historical buildings, you will love it here. Note that there is no elevator.
