“We loved Hidden Pond”

My husband and I stayed at Hidden Pond last August during a perfect week-end. WE are very discerning travelers and always find that there is not a lot of choice for 5-star hotels in New England. We absolutely loved our stay:
Positive: Beautiful cottage that have great bathroom and outdoor shower and very comfortable bed. Great location in the woods and 1 mile from beautiful beach. Earth restaurant (excellent)!
Great pool area and really fun bonfire at night under starry sky. We had really good service.
Negative: They need to improve on breakfast, they just deliver a cold breakfast with pastries. With the new restaurant Earth they have no excuse.Have to start doing made to order with eggs etc. The blinds in the cottages are not good at blocking sun in the morning. Bring sleeping mask! But overall, it's a great summer vacation.

“we can't stop talking about it!”

seriously. we spent three nights in the twilight bungalow - so cozy (but not small), clean, luxurious, very comfy bed, gas fireplace, outdoor shower, classical music on the radio... other favorites: the after dinner bonfire with smores basket & spiked hot chocolate; bikes for use any time; hot coffee, baked goods and nytimes delivered to our door every morning; bike ride to beautiful goose rocks beach (low tide sad bars and seals frolicking in the water!); and a fun and absolutely delicious dinner at Earth. perfect vacation for relaxation.

really, i could go on and on. it was awesome. we've stayed in many luxury hotels around the world and this place was phenomenal. we definitely plan to return...

...only tip is that we would have liked maps or info on walking trails on property (though we did try one).

“Heaven on Earth!”

We celebrated my birthday at Hidden Pond earlier this month. Upon arriving we were greeted by their friendly front desk staff and cookies in the beautiful "lobby." We were escorted to our cottage where upon entering I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven! First we were impressed by an inviting screened in porch which overlooked a beautiful grassy area and a tranquil pond. The living area had relaxing music playing when we arrived and there's a large super comfy couch perched in front of a mesmerizing fireplace. One could sit there for hours drinking wine and watching the fire; oh wait I did exactly that with the complementary bottle of wine left by the management to celebrate my birthday! Thank you very much! The bed is wonderfully large with a plush duvet and super soft Frette linens. The bath is tastefully decorated with wonderful Malin & Goetz toiletries and there was an outdoor shower. Sadly it was too cold and rainy to enjoy that added bonus! The grounds are absolutely stunning with beautiful walkways and there are bikes available if you're so inclined. The evening fire by the main pool is simply picturesque! Every morning "Goldilocks" delivers a basket full of goodies; delicious fresh baked muffins, breads, butter, jams, coffee, fresh fruit and yogurt. A basket of goodies in front of the fire is marvelous! Yogi Bear would be envious!

In the late afternoon we decided to try the restaurant on site; Earth. The decor was beautiful and very inviting, however the food was not up to par with the rest of Hidden Pond's charm. We were the only guest in the restaurant and as such we did receive great service from our food server. The cocktails he made for us were wonderful, the food was not. I ordered the crab cake and my husband ordered the burger. Both entrees took forever too arrive; over 40 minutes. Both items were so incredibly salty! Perhaps the most over salted food we've ever eaten in a restaurant anywhere; and we've eaten in a lot of restaurants worldwide! We didn't say anything to our server as we didn't want to wait another 40 minutes for replacements to arrive!

Regardless of our "salty" experience I would not hesitate to recommend Hidden Pond to anyone looking for "Heaven on Earth!" A wonderful place to relax and disconnect from the world and reconnect with the one you love!

Room Tip: All the cottages looked amazing!

“Very nice, but not what it used to be.”

My husband and I just returned from an anniversary weekend at Hidden Pond. This was our third visit to the property - our first stay in the new bungalows. I was excited to check out the new accomodations - but a bit disappointed in them. Maybe we were just spoiled by the exquisite cottages where we stayed the first 2 times. The bungalows are more "rustic", and do not appear to be completely finished (missing decorations - a bit sparse - too many sticks and antlers). They were fine and the bed was super comfy, but not what I expected after all the attention to detail you see in the cottages. The "kitchen" area already looked worn - cracked and stained countertop, only 1 wineglass left during the entire stay, etc. There was no water pressure in the bathroom sink. These may just be kinks that need to be worked out in the new area . However, with the addition of all the bungalows, one wonders whether the staff is stretched too thin and if the service and attention to detail will suffer. There were some small changes that might not be noticed unless you had stayed before. The breakfast was late and not warm or varied. No goodie bag for the ride home? We always received before and that was such a nice touch. No to-go cups to get coffee in the lodge in the morning. All pretty minor but these things were offered - and offered perfectly before. It seems unwise to take away amenities that guests have become accustomed to and expect at a resort of this caliber and cost poiint. Don't get me wrong - you will have a lovely time here - we did. The setting is beautiful and you feel like you are in another world. But I hope the management will pay attention to what seems like some slipping in the overall experience so that people will be dying to return like I was after my first 2 visits.

Dear Broilwoman,
Thanks so much for your repeat business and Happy Belated Anniversary! We are honored that you chose Hidden Pond as your special getaway destination and apologize that your experience wasn't what you had expected. Since you've stayed with us before, you know the level of service we usually provide and level of detail we typically focus on. The things you note are true anomolies to us...we always send people off with a Farewell Bag, and to-go coffee cups should always be available. These have been addressed. Regarding the bungalow decoration and wear and tear, we will examine each and every cottage over the winter, using guest feedback and a fine-tooth comb to make sure everything is perfect for next year. Breakfast has been the most commented on amenity and we will be changing it up for the 2012 season.
We truly appreciate your time in helping us improve, and hope you'll join us next year again for your Anniversary.
Best,
Hidden Pond

“Ultimate in Relaxation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

I second what other reviewers have said; Hidden Pond is the ultimate in relaxation. Fabulous location for exploring the Kennebunks, Portland, Freeport, etc., but with the beautifully furnished bungalows/cottages with fireplaces, couches, and screened porch, it's also a great place to just sit and read.

Our meal at Earth was excellent, highly recommend. Food was wonderful and service was even better. Massage by Melissa was also outstanding.

We loved: high attention to detail with small things like sharp knives and flashlights in the room, the super-charm of the decor and setting, friendliness of the staff, incredibly comfortable bed, pillows, blankets, the s'mores by the bonfire, housekeeping did a great job each day.

Suggested improvements: more timely delivery of breakfast (our breakfast delivery ranged from 8am sharp to 8:40), inclusion of fresh fruit with breakfast (we did stop and pick some up and loved the small fridge in the bungalow), a small microwave in the bungalows, a more thorough check-in process (we were shown to our bungalow and then immediately left on our own with no idea how to work the a/c, the lights, fireplace, etc. - all easy enough to figure out, but a walk-through would have been nice), more reliable internet service (ours was very spotty to the point of not available 80% of the time). These are thing you expect at $500+/night, and it is a smidgen disappointing Hidden Pond doesn't feel like a better deal for the money.

Overall, wonderful.
