For my recent trip to Greenville, I chose the Moosehead Hills Cabins partially because of the reviews and because of the view from the cabins. There were only two of us, so we chose the smaller cabin, the Kineo cabin. Upon arrival, there was a nice 'open' flag out front of the owners home where we were to check in, and I was greeted by a very pleasant younger lady, Christine (I can't quite remember the name, but that might be it), who checked us in. While she was very friendly, I was disappointed to not meet the owners of the cabins, Sally and Bill, who are raved about in some of the reviews. I actually did not see or meet the owners the entire trip which was fairly short in their defense. Typically, I have found that owners of private rentals such as this can make or break or a good stay. Unfortunately, these owners had no impact on our stay whatsoever.
The cabin, itself, was mostly clean but I would not say comfortable. Though the two of us had no issues moving about in the cabin, I could not, in any reality, see how a family of 5 could function comfortably in this cabin. There was one bedroom downstairs that slept two and a bedroom upstairs that slept two in one double/queen bed and a third in a twin bed. Other travelers should be informed that the stairs to the bedroom were extremely steep and would be, in my opinion, unsafe for any child, even older children, and older adults. I, as a 28 year old, had a hard time coming up and down the stairs. The living area was extremely small, again adequate for us, but not for a family of 4 or even 5. I do understand some people do not come to Greenville to sit in their cabins, but for the short time in the cabin, it was a very cramped space. The bathroom was extremely tiny, and the small dining table only sat 4 people. Where is the 5th (if applicable) supposed to sit? The same situation prevailed on the partially uncovered deck, which had a fantastic view, but only four chairs.
Along with the less than adequate space and seating arrangements, the hot water heater was above and beyond inadequate for this cabin. For my first shower, I ran out of hot water within around 7 minutes or so. Maybe other travelers take showers that quickly. I, however, do not. It took almost 30 minutes for the water to become warm again, and the hot water ran out even more quickly on the second shower. For parties of more than two, getting a shower with warm to hot water would be nearly impossible to accomplish. And if the hot water were being used for washing dishes, taking a warm shower would be out of the question.
The decor and the cleanliness of the cabin wavered. The sheets and kitchen (including the dishes) were extremely clean, but the bathroom was not. There were no hairs left behind from a previous renter, but there was mold, and lots of it. There was mold covering the shower curtain and even, what looked to be, mold growing above the sink in the bathroom. The owners seemed to pick out very nice, heavy towels for the bathroom, so why not replace the moldy, nasty shower curtain? As a side note, each guest gets one set of towels. If the set needs to be replaced (basically washed) there is a $5 fee for the set. This is nothing but a complete rip off. It does not cost $5 to wash one towel, hand towel, and washcloth. While our short stay did not require the exchange of towels, a longer stay of, say a week, might, and to ask guests to pay a fee for clean towels is unreasonable.
The decor was inconsistent throughout. Some areas of "homey/cabin" like decor with moose, deer, bear, and quilted material, other areas with ducks and a picture of a child sitting on a toilet.
The cabin also does not have a television which I knew up front. However, I talked to others who were on a moose tour with me that stayed at another cabin facility very close to Moosehead Hills Cabins, and they had television. This may or may not be important to other travelers, but I found not being able to find out the weather more irritating than I had original thought.
If I did decide to return to Moosehead Hills Cabins, I would probably choose the "Tomhegan" cabin as it seemed a little larger and had a better view. I did get a sneak peek of the "Seboomook" cabin which had a good view too but was just as cramped as our cabin and slept an extra person. The upstairs, which had a pull down staircase, slept, what looked like, two in separate twin beds. Overall, the "Kineo" cabin, in my opinion, was just okay. While I am sure there are far worse options in Greenville, I will look at other cabins first before I would return here.
