You know you're going to a good place when the person working at the State Tourism Info Centre goes "Oooo, Recompence. Nice Place".
Of the many campgrounds in Maine, this was the only one we got with sea-side camping at an affordable price. We had to fore-go electric/water service to get sea-side, but the view was worth it. We probably had one of the more private sea-side sites (#160), with no adjacent neighbours. For those of you who want power and water, they had lovely wooded sites near the main office. They looked quite nice, and seemed nicely spaced out for some privacy.
There's lots for younger kids to do. Heck the place runs a day-camp for the area, and your welcome to enroll your child. I'm not sure of the price for that though.
Freeport and LL Bean and nearby, maybe ten minutes on some rough roads. Makes things in the campground nice and quiet at night though, no nearby highways or interstate noises. Old Orchard Beach is 30-40 minutes away, a perfectly acceptable distance for those of us who want to "set up a base camp ONCE for a few days, and then tour the area" vs "move as close as you can each time".
Our biggest problems were with the out-houses, and the main comfort station (Flush Toilets & Showers). The out-houses were very smelly, and even the Flush Toilet building stank (though that might have been a temporary plumbing emergency. They were fixing it all day as of when we left). Showers were okay, but the middle person definitely got the "left-over" hot water, not an assured flow of water.
Bottom Line: I would return. My wife would not, unless the outhouses were replaced with flush vault toilets.
