“Very nice - but very isolated and you have to supply toilet paper!”

We stayed at the Oakland House during the last week of June. The cottage we rented was very clean, very well kept, and right on the water. The area on the Blue Hill peninsula is stunning, when the sun is out. We enjoyed buying lobster right out of the lobster man's garage (although it would have been nice if the cottage had a lobster pot to cook it in - we had to buy one). We took an eco-cruise through Old Quarry adventures which was a lot of fun - saw seals and eagles and great scenery. Also check out the web site for the Flash in the Pan Steel Band, which is a local Steel Band that gives outdoor concerts. They were, totally, totally AWESOME!!!!!
The one thing I think you should keep in mind though, is that Oakland House is very, very, remote. We did not have access to a TV (there are none), computer (of course not - have to go sit in a parking lot about 20 minutes away to access), telephone (our cells did not work here), not even a radio is provided, which really should be so that at least you can get the weather report. The nearest store to buy a newspaper is about 15 minutes away. Personally, I felt a little too isolated. TV, internet and phone I can do without - but no radio and a newspaper was a little much. Also, the place is not on the ocean, but on a bay - not that is a problem, but just be aware of it. Most importantly, they expect YOU to replace the soap, dish washing detergent, toilet paper, etc before you leave with "eco-friendly" brands (no Joy dishwashing liquid for them!). I think this should have been made clear at the time of the reservation. I really don't feel it's appropriate to tell customer's they're responsible for these items (toilet paper and soap? Come one!) AFTER they get there (and the nearest store is 20 minutes away in Blue Hill). I probably wouldn't recommend this place to a friend - we left 2 days early.

“Ageless Beauty”

It is remarkable that the Littlefield family have been devoted stewards to Oakland House Seaside Resort and its beautiful environs since 1889. They have continued to uphold a long tradition of warmth and hospitality. Sally and Jim's dedicated care of Oakland Resort and its guests is apparent -- from tending sweeping flower beds at the main house (cheerily welcoming all) to maintaining and appointing seaside cottages in very charming ways. Their love of place imbues the resort with an idyllic sensibility. Walking trails on the property have been thoughtfully built, ensuring woodland foraging and lovely vistas. The setting -- stunning coastline -- offers long views of the islands of eastern Penobscot Bay that are truly breathtaking. Oakland House Resort ... to Savor!

“WONDERRFUL!”

The coast of Maine has a beauty all its own and the Oakland House displays it like none other. The best part is the location. It's remote, but not so remote that you feel detatched from everything. Fifteen minutes and you can be in Blue Hill and in an hour and a half you can be at Acadia National Park.

The staff was great and the innkeepers were friendly and gracious when I met them. The cabin was cute and clean, nothing to improve upon. Again, I mention location!! Beautiful!!!

Bring a book with you so that you can take advantage of the piece and quiet. Enjoy the porch of your cabin or take a short hike that's on property that ends at a beautiful view from a large open rocky area (my favorite spot), it's on the property map.

Let me say that if you are looking for someplace that will give you something to do day in and day out, this is not the place for you. However, if you're looking for a place to let time slow down and that'll allow you to recharge, look no further. It's an amazing place that everyone should experience.

“They just don't make places like this anymore”

The Oakland House is timeless and beautiful. Watch the seals and sailboats go by in the world-class Eggemoggin Reach, sit in adirondack chairs, visit the local art scene, experience great service, the list goes on... truly a diamond in the rough. The Oakland House has history and personality. The care that the Littlefield family has taken in keeping and improving the expansive property (complete with its own hiking trails- one that leads up to a scenic bluff, canoes, fine dining, beautifully built cottages and a garden to boot) shows at every opportunity.

  • Liked — The natural beauty and personal service
