We did not know what to expect and for the price, I felt it was slightly sub-par. It was a nice, homey place and very convenient as far as having breakfast, lunch, dinner or just drinks right downstairs. The innkeeper/manager was a man and he did make every attempt to be friendly. We never met the rude female manager everyone is talking about. The food was very good and the potential for relaxing was there; however, this was true as long as there were no unruly kids running around. I'm sure it was great fun for them--I would have loved it as a kid there myself! But, it is not much fun when you are trying to enjoy your meal to have a few kids yelling or running back and forth with the parents doing not much of anything to stop them. One morning after one particular family arrived it was chaos. We had gone back to our room to rest after breakfast and there were young children running up and down the hallway, banging on their room door, yelling, slamming doors--it was unbelievable. One parent was in the room trying to talk on the phone, we think, and the other was somewhere downstairs ignoring them. Good grief!
We were in the middle of nowhere and didn't prepare very well other than looking up some boat excursion places. Everyone we called was "dead in the water" so to speak since no one was even going out. We had a very nice experience viewing Life on Lobster at a local playhouse one evening, produced and directed by locals, who were actually in the audience and got up and answered questions afterward.
We love Maine and are going back this time to the "other" Eggemoggin on Little Deer Isle. I would gladly return to Eggemoggin Lodge in Brooklin, if the price was significantly lower and there were no kids staying there at the same time. The lunch and dinner menus were a little pricey, and breakfast was okay with me. I happen to like toast and fresh fruit for breakfast rather than eggs. I thought the selection was very nice. I did have to request a hair dryer, but the staff hunted it down for me and got it to me within a couple of hours. Luckily I requested it the day before I needed it.
