“Tent, Yes - RV, No”

This campground is definitely not designed for motorhomes. The sites can be challenging to back into and there is no traffic pattern. Upon entering or exiting, you take your chances for running into someone coming the opposite way. I mentioned this to the older couple that run the place and they told me that if there's a problem, they take care of it (whatever that means). When you're in a motorhome with a car in tow, backing up can present a problem. The same problem exists with the entrance roadway. It is so narrow, one vehicle would have to back up upon meeting a vehicle from the opposite direction. If you tent, Gray's would be an ideal campground.

The fire wood which is available at the campground is $7.00 for a milk crate which you load yourself. The wood is old, mostly punky and rotten. The water pressure is a heavy drip at best and it's extremely difficult to shower. Wi-fi is $5.00 per day. They also don't accept personal checks or credit cards. One is told at the time of reservation to be sure to bring cash. I, too, detected a sense of arrogance, however, I don't know what it is they have to be arrogant about. There are many other campground in Maine that are on the ocean with beautiful views and the necessary amenities. I would not return to this campground in the future.

Thank you for your review. We, at Gray's, do try to be very helpful with our campers needs. We are a campground with a more natural terrain & mostly back-into sites. We have measured & looked at what people can get into & have set limits for each site. We all use the same key for length, etc. when assigning a site to a camper. We do show on our site map, on our website, where sites are located & that they are not pull-thru's. Also, some sites will take a 25' camper & others will take up to a 40' which we having coming all summer long. It is true that we , like most camgrounds, have a road that goes around the loop in order to arrive at your sites, but it should be rare that you would face another camper. Campers that are pulling out leave 2 hrs. before campers arriving & if anyone needs help being directed with their camper, our staff is always happy to help.
I am truly sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. We are a small family business & will keep on trying to improve for all campers.

“They cheated me of a great holiday.”

We went camping there in 2007. Loved it so much that we decided to reserve for the next year. We paid in FULL for 2 weeks. When time came to go, I was in the hospital and had to cancel. We called and asked for a refund? NO, a rain check anytime? NO

They were impossible to talk to, irrational, and mean.

Although the view is great, we will NEVER go back there, there are other places that deserve our money. Madeleine

We are so sorry & I am at a loss as to what happened in your situation because i always refund or reschedule for any serious medical emergencies. Certainly, being in the hospital is an emergency. Feel free to contact us so that we can right this situation.

“Lovely campground, nice staff, great views - can't wait to go back”

Camped in tent site 16 (it was the only site we could get a reservation for). Rate was $33 per night. The site had plenty of space, nice fire ring and picnic table. There was a view of the ocean through some trees.

The downsides:
- The sites with the really great views are taken by RV's. I would guess, likely to be booked for the full season.
- The sites are not 'open' but they aren't very private either.
- Restrooms do not have any soap, so you need to bring your own soap whenever you go.
- Firewood is expensive, bring your own

The upsides - far out weigh the downsidess:
- GREAT views. Great location.
- Nice clean bathrooms and hot clean showers
- All sites have thier own water
- Sites are maintained well. They seem to clear the ashes out of the fire rings every day.
- Nice beach with Kayaks (pay) and picnic tables (free)
- Reasonably priced cooked lobsters on site, just order the day off.
- Really nice staff. I saw a review about a cranky owner. I am not sure who we dealt with when we were there. They were an older couple and nice as could be.
- They have cottages and apartments for weekly rental that look SWEET.

Nearby - there is a general store in Southport that was great. We had a good selection of their baked goods - all were delicious. They have breakfast pizza which my husband loved. We got a roast beef sandwich that was really good. Seems like you can't go wrong there, at least we enjoyed everything we bought. We got take out from Robinsons Warf twice. The food was good but the service was horrible and it was a total production each time. Will find a new seafood take out place for next visit.

Had a great time at Grays's would highly recommend checking them out.

“Rustic, but comfortable”

We spent an entire summer at Gray's, and were saddened when it all ended. We have a 36 foot MH, and, although getting into our site was a little tricky, it wasn't all that difficult. Anyone who can back up, and follow hand signals can do it.
Our site was up the hill from the office, in the trees. Very secluded and peaceful. Although the park has no store, we enjoyed the short trip into town for shopping and dining. Lots and lots of really good restaurants. Oh yes, did I mention that fresh lobsters are generally available in the park, either live, or they will cook them for you, and at a better price than anywhere else.
We full-time, and travel extensively. People are always asking us where our favorite places are, and number 1 is always Gray's. We are looking forward to a return visit.

“All the comforts of....well not quite home but good enough!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2005

I just returned from a 4 day trip to Boothbay Harbor, ME complete with ocean camping at Gray's and I have NO regrets!! We stayed in one of the Oceanfront sites (17C) and the view was spectacular.

Ocean Front Sites
For those of you who might be looking for a site directly ON the ocean (like you can walk 5 feet to the water) this isn't what it's like. You're basically up above the ocean on a bluff (as shown by the pictures). It's still beautiful and very private. We didn't have ANY outside campers come walking through our site - as a previous poster warned - and the only complaint I had was that the other sites throughout the campgrounds were larger and more grassy. The ocean front sites are smaller (but not tiny - plenty of room for a 6 person tent, picnic table, fire pit and still much room to walk around) since I assume they wanted to get as many in as possible for the customers, and it's mostly dirt and lots of tree roots. Not a big deal to me considering it's camping, not a luxury hotel. But it does make it somewhat difficult for a toddler to walk around - though he was doing better than us by the end of the week! Most of the other sites you can park your car right next to your site, but for the ocean front you have to park and walk through a little path to get to your site since there's a bit of distance between the two spots. Not far - but definitely further than the other sites.

Bathrooms and Facilities (though I can only speak for the Females)
The bathrooms were excellent!! They are cleaned every day between 11 and 12 and other than a few cobwebs when you look up, I was shocked by how comfortable they actually were. There are 3 bathroom stalls (flushing toilets) and 2 shower stalls. Showers were hot and a quarter for 7 minutes. I found myself using 2 quarters most of the time. I never waited for a shower and the 4 days that I was there I only saw 1 person waiting. There is a hair dryer in the bathroom and somebody usually leaves hand soap on the counter - but bring your own just in case. The lights DO go on at night, but they're on a timer and are motion sensored. So generally they will come on when you walk in, but if they don't just flick the switch to the left of the doorway.

Activities
Gray's offers so many activities to keep you busy. My husband and I took an hour and went ocean kayaking - the kayak was very sturdy and it was smooth sailing for us! It was $20 for an hour in a double kayak and that was more than enough. The views were spectacular and we traveled pretty far in that hour. Just a warning, though - it really is self-service. You just fill out a form and they send you on your way. So if you've never kayaked you might be a little uncomfortable since you are in a harbor where there are power boats and tour boats going through. Not a big deal - you just need to keep your eyes and ears open! They also have ammenities for most sports - a basketball net (keep your kids supervised, though since it is right by the entrance), a volleyball net and plenty of sports equipment in the office.

Food
One of the most convenient things at Gray's is that they will go lobstering for you! For a very low price (at the time we went it was $6.25 for a 1 lb. lobster) they will catch the lobster for you and even steam it for an extra $4 (for up to 6 lobsters). It was so convenient and we just roasted some corn over the campfire for dinner one night (bring your own grate to lay over the fire since it's not guaranteed they'll have one for you). Just order your lobsters by 4 PM and let them know what time you want them cooked by and you're all set!

Miscellaneous
Ice - you can purchase ice at the front office. It was $1.50/bag when we went
Firewood - you can purchase firewood as well at the front office. $5 and you take a crate and go fill it up yourself. Just remember to return the crate when you're done!!

Conclusion
So that's basically it! Gray's is a beautiful awesome, friendly, convenient place to camp and I'll be returning next time we visit Maine. It's convenient to downtown Boothbay Harbor (about 10 minutes unless the swing bridge is open - or not under construction as it was while we were visiting) and the perfect rustic getaway. They also have cottages for rent - visit their site for rates.
