“Could not get deposit back”

I made reservations for Grays arriving sunday evening 8/28. As we all know Irene was moving up the East Coast and no way was I leaving my home in Rochester New York with flooded roads, down power lines and closed roads to reach Southport Island. I called today and could not get back my deposit of $100.00. I know they have a non refundable policy but come on with a storm there was no way I could get there safely. I was offered a later reservation and cannot as my grandson starts school in a week. Asked if we could use the money next year and was told no way. Thank you Mr. Gray you have stolen $100.00 of my money. You can be assured I will never stay at this campground again.

We are sorry for the response from us last August. You may use your deposit within the 2012 season. Usually, we offer a credit within that season so that we, as a small business, do not lose the income in two seasons. We don't refund or reschedule for regular weather conditions. We do believe in trying to keep our campers happy in this lovely spot. Hopefully, we will see you this season. Thank You.

“Third Time Visitor to Gray's”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2011

I just visited Gray's on Monday afternoon and decided to visit without having reservations. The souther lady as some call her is Marita. The campsite was completely booked, but she offered us an overflow site that we could not fit our 4 person tent on, she was gracious enough to call a nearby campsite to reserve a site for us to stay. While there a gent. wanted a spot just to sleep in his car for the night. She accommodated him also. We have had 2 pleasant experiences in the past, and would return, but the owner was in our presence this week and did nothing to make us feel welcome. All in all the location is worth a trip, is relaxing, and I guess people contemplating a stay should make their intentions known in advance. We traveled with a small bichon and had no issues at this time.

“They are not camper friendly”

My wife and I tried two times to get into this campground in the past, but found that it was always booked. We finely were able to make reservations this summer. We are avid kayakers and were excited to try the Southport Island loop. The campground is in the perfect location for this.

My friend had warned me before going that the owner was a jerk and that he would never return again after a bad experience with him. He had camped there several times in the past.

They have a policy that forbids any mats on the ground outside of your camper (due to killing the grass (understandable)). Our campsite was crushed rock for the motorhome and just off the crushed rock was dusty dirt (the kind that tracks into the camper). There was no grass growing in this area. Due to the dirt, I placed our matt on the ground to keep the camper clean.

After a day of camping, one of the older work campers came up to our campsite and asked us to roll up our ground mat. I showed him that there was no grass under it and that it was dusty dirt. He agreed and allowed us to fold the mat in half and tuck it under the camper so that we could have something to wipe our feet on before entering the camper.

The next day, the owner (Steven Gray) walked by our camper 3 times while we were cooking dinner. Just as we sat down to eat, The older work camper arrived and told us to pull up the ground mat. He stated that the owner was not going to allow us to use it. He stated that he told Mr. Gray that there was no grass under it, but it did not matter.

I was so upset that the owner would not come and talk with us himself and send an old man to do it that I packed up and left the campground after eating. I live in Maine and will not return not only by my experience, but also from the past experiences of many other people that I know. I should have listened to them.

Its to bad because the campground is very pretty. I think the owner should further his lobstering career and stay out of the campground business.

We are very sorry about your experience with the rugs on the grass at your site. Hopefully, this will help. We refresh our grassy sites each spring & sometimes early summer in order to groom them & make them visually pleasing to the eye. We spend about 2 months getting the grounds ready for campers. Often about a month into the season certain sites will no longer show grass, but a patch of dry dirt from one rug after another, so we often asked campers to refrain from using their rugs. As you know, many people really want to use them, so instead we have included an area of nice crushed rock where you may now put out your rug. Hopefully, this will work well for all campers.
I'm sorry that I did not know of your specific situation, but I know that when Mr. Gray is not on duty in the office, he will delegate the responsibilities to those that are on duty whether they are the young or older folks we hire. Usually, when Mr. Gray is not on duty & passing by the sites, it's because he has been climbing under the bathhouse to mend plumbing or fixing a sewer pipe & needs to get back to the house & clean himself up.
Again, we apologize & never meant to offend you in any way. We hope you will come & try us again sometime, especially since the new crushed rock should correct any rug & dead grass issues. Thank you.

“too much $ for what it is.”

Okay, so we arrived late (8PM) which is exactly when the office closes. The cost was rather high, and our site had trash in it from previous campers! YUK. Then again the office was closed and we were given no info as to how to access the wifi, as we were not given the password. We had a small camper, with no toilet, no pets no kids, so not too many demands. I was just taken back with the cost coupled with the lack of little extras I would have thought I might get for that price (ie: free showers, wifi info given with other info if the office closed so early, and a spotless site!). All for ~ $50/night. Like I said before I have happily paid m ore, but want to get what I pay for.

Hello. We truly hope you will try us again someday.
We do post our hours on the website & generally let people know, if they say they will arrive late in the day, that we close by 8:00pm. We stay open 11 hours each day & we hope that suits most people. We will give the password for the wi-fi as soon as people check into the office, which may be in the morning if you arrive after we close.
We do spend time everyday with mowing, weedwhacking, & picking up litter at sites & the beach. All summer we receive compliments on the cleanliness of the campground & we are sorry that your site was not appropriate for check-in. We will defininely be very careful to watch for that in 2012.
Also, you are correct. The bathhouse is coin-operated & costs 25 cents for a shower. We did not charge for many years, but eventually thought it a good idea to conserve on water. We have a well system that needed some protection from running too low. We are on an island & need to protect our precious resources.
We do hope that our closing time & coin-operated showers are not an obstacle to your returning to this beautiful spot someday in the future. Thanks you.

“Our long-anticipated family vacation was pretty much spoiled...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2011

Gray's does have nice, rustic sites, and nice cottages. However, on our second night, we arrived back at our cottage to find it full of big, black ants. They were everywhere - on the pillows even! We had not left food out and could see no reason they had invaded the cottage. We had to wake the owners up, who gave us a can of bug spray and promised to bombe the cottage the next day. The spray didn't relieve the problem and my 6-year-old grandson, we felt, shouldn't be around the fumes. So we had to find a nearby hotel at 11:00 at night, then grab what we could quickly and get out. We were up half the night, barely slept, then when we called to ask the owner to let us get our things out before he bombed, found he had already bombed. We had to stay away for hours, then when we came back, we had to take all of our clothes and bedding to the laundry. We also had to throw away some things that weren't covered when the bombs were set off.

Meantime, my two daughters were worried about bringing their young children up to join us at the adjacent campsite we had paid for for them as they were worried, especially about my 6-month-old grandson being around the chemicals used to kill the ants. The owners categorically refused to refund ANY of the money for the campsite. Once we had the cottage cleaned up and the fumes had dissipated, and after reading the label on the bug bombe that was used, we felt it would be safe for my grandkids after all. So my daughters packed for their trip from Connecticut that they planned for the next day. THAT night we came back to the cottage to find another tent set up on the site we had already paid for and which we never confirmed with the owners that we wouldn't be using. They never once tried to communicate in any way to any of us to see if we no longer needed the campsite. So, while refusing to refund our money, they at the same time rented the site out from under us to someone else.

When we asked them about it, they didn't even apologize or act as if they'd done anything wrong. Instead they offered a site to my daughters and grandkids that was right next to the garbage area and far away from both the cottage and the bathrooms! Anyone who's camped with young kids knows you need to have a bathroom available and close by! The attitude exhibited by the owners and especially by the older woman with the Southern accent (who should never be allowed to deal with the public as she was totally arrogant and down her nose with us in any dealings with her) was definitely not that of someone who wants a return visit. It's sad that our vacation was spoiled in these ways because we had had good experiences the previous two years we were there. But after the extreme stress and the arrogant attitude of those in charge, we wouldn't go back there again.

We understand that you enjoyed our property, but were unhappy with our response to your situation last July.
We hope you understand that, like you, we do not know why the ants came in on your 2nd night at the cottage. We had not had them prior to that date nor did we have them any other time during the season. Sometimes nature has a mind of it's own; something we can't anticipate.
I can say that Mr. Gray went & purchased the ant repellent early the next morning & set it up in the cottage while you were gone. We had spoken the night before & understood that you wanted us to take care of it right away.
Next we had people go in & clean surfaces of any residue.
Also, after checking in my book, I see that we did write out 2 checks to you while you were here. One, on July 6th, for the loss of one night at the cottage of 171.00, which should have more than covered the motel 1/2 mile from us where you stayed, & the 2nd one for 79.18 July 8th for the tent site that you cancelled over concerns of residue from the ant bomb. Both Mr. Gray & I did clearly hear that you no longer wanted the site. We did happen to rent it at the last minute to another camper & told them what site it was. When you informed us about your change of mind all we could do is offer a different tent site, which is also a nice tent site & just as close to the bathhouse as the other site was. People are pleased with this site all summer long.
We then discovered, as you were checking out, that the sliding screen at the cottage had been ripped. We check cottages after each rental & it had not been like that prior to your arrival. We then charged a 40.00 fee to repair the screen at which you objected & refused. I, Suzanne Gray, was called out to the office & tried to explain our policy. You were unhappy with our fee for the screen repair so I waived the fee.
We do try hard to rectify any problems that may arise on people's vacations. We know that this is your vacation & we want to make you happy.
Thank you for this opportunity to respond.
