My wife and I decided to very spontaneously stay an evening in Boothbay Harbor this past August. We've visited the town frequently and just love the place. Our critieria was twofold in settling for a place...1) walking distance to the docks, and 2) view of the open harbor (not some water, rocks, and the opposite shore. We checked out a few quaint B&B's but nothing clicked. We checked out a hotel on the water and the rooms just screamed "Motel 6". On our rambling down Commercal Street, we came to the Admiral's Quarters. We actually stayed there once back in 1986 and initially hesitated. We remembered it as just old. We met Kim at the front desk and found that the establishment was aquired by the Greenleaf Inn and had gone through extensive renovation. We decided to grab the last room available and we were more than happy we did. While our room wasn't up to the location and view of the front rooms and their balconies, it was spacious, comfortable, and homey. It was beautiful day (a little cool, but how often is it hot in Boothbay?) so we sat on the front deck with a bottle of wine and just watched the harbor life. Kim suggested dinner at the Italian restaurant three doors down. Wow! Breakfast the next morning was great. The eating area is actually in the adjacent Greenleaf Inn. It is spacious and allows separate seating. However we had a few couples next to us with whom we instantly struck up conversations with. Oh yeah, the breakfast. Kim served up a hollowed out tomato with a poached egg inside, sitting on a "birds nest" of angel hair pasta. There was fresh fruit, fresh yogurt, and unusual but pleaseing selections such as hummus and tabouleh. This is the only place we're going to check out the next time we're in Boothbay Harbor.
