Al and Jackie were incredibly accommodating and welcoming!
We had to arrive late, and Jackie and Al were both on hand to greet us and give us the run-down of their home. The common area was quiet and comfortable, with a gas stove and lots of fun Tolkien books to read. (I still think they should call the living room the "Hall of Fire!", in tribute to the wonderful hall of storytelling in Tolkien's books!) Al came in and shared a glass of brandy with us, and we ended up spending a good hour chatting and sharing stories. A nicer couple can't be found! After chatting about our breakfast preferences and the time we preferred to eat (a nice touch!) we headed up stairs to our bedroom.
Our room was very clean and comfortable, filled with brochures and coupons for the area. We stayed in the Taylor room, which was warm, cozy, and had mint-Lindt chocolates as a welcome treat :) The bathroom had organic castille soap available, and a hairdryer (I hate traveling with one, so this was a nice touch!) The hallways are filled with great prints, pictures, and artifacts of the things that Jackie and Al love, and the places they've traveled, and it really made the house feel homey and instantly comfortable.
We had a good night's sleep, a great breakfast of cheesy scrambled eggs, bacon, and to-die-for homemade bread, and then skied the next day at Mt.Abram. When we arrived home from skiing at about 5:00, we shared homemade scones and tea in the dining room with the other couple that was staying, and had good conversations with the owners as well. They gave us great recommendations for dinner (we ate at the Jolly Drayman pub) and we spent another nice evening and had french-toast the next morning!
It's always nice to find a home-away-from home; and we are excited to visit the Rivendell House again!
