“Fabulous inn with comfy beds, excellent food, and wonderful hospitality.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012 via mobile

This was the second time we've stayed at the Briar Lea Inn. We started coming to the fabulous restaurant, the Jolly Drayman, years ago when we skied at Sunday River. My husband is from Cambridge, England, and loved it. This weekend just my daughter and I came. It's been wonderful. Very cozy room, quiet (and we're on the 2nd floor, not the 3rd), and lovely bed. The shower is great too. My only complaint was some lights were missing lightbulbs (easily fixed). We love this place and will be back.

“Nothing could be finer than to stay at The Briar Lea Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

I spent a beautiful Fall weekend at the Inn. The room was very comfortable and cozy. The location was great for getting out and seeing the Fall Colors as well as several of the local attractions.

After a full day of sight seeing the Pub and Restaurant is a great place for a meal and a drink. The shepherd's pie was delicious with a pint of Smithwick's. The menu had a nice selection of pub food as well as Indian cuisine. It was hard to choose what to have for dinner as the choices all looked and smelled so good.

The pub has a great selection of quality local and English/Irish beers. Fred also makes a great martini!

Thanks Cindy and Fred for making my stay so enjoyable.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at Briar Lee Inn during October 2011. The room was spotlessly clean, very comfortable and the perfect setting for a visit to New England during the fall. The owners were delightful and made an effort to make sure we felt right at home. The food in the restaurant was delicious and overall we felt this was the ideal place to stay. We highly reccommend it.

“Quaint inn with delicious food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

My husband and I spent two nights at this inn to start our New England "leaf-peeping" trip earlier this month. Even though the antique furnishings are not quite as comfortable as some of our other stays, this was still one of our favorite places to stay in New England, and one of the most cozy and tasty restaurants. We enjoy B&Bs but most do not offer dinner, so it was a nice novelty for us to have a delicious dinner in a charming English pub atmosphere and just walk upstairs when we were through. Both dinners we enjoyed there were so tasty - Indian food the first night, and the best bangers & mash I've ever had the second night. Good selections of local and imported beers, too. I was worried about road noise based on some other reviews, but we also stayed in the Chumleigh and though you could definitely hear the occasional truck roll by, it was not at all bad in my opinion.

Cindy and Fred were very nice about pulling out a map in the morning and suggesting a great driving path, and we really enjoyed this relatively secluded corner of Maine. The breakfasts were nothing too fancy, but a solid option. Would definitely recommend this place for either dinner or a stay at the inn.

“Quaint, Comfortable, and Delicious Food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

My husband and I spent one night here while passing through Maine on a leaf-peeping trip to New England. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-appointed, although very dark. The lighting, in keeping with the overall atmosphere of the inn, was quite dim which worked well for ambiance, but made reading tour books and maps a bit difficult. We stayed in the Chumleigh Room, which was quite cozy with an electric fireplace (which we didn't need) and a fan in the closet (which we did need, and were thrilled to find). However, the bathtub had a ring around it, and was very slow to drain.

We had dinner in The Jolly Drayman (first floor) and it was absolutely FABULOUS! We decided to have an appetizer and chose "The Mountain" which was HUGE. The best way to describe it is mini hashbrowns piled high with bacon bits, green onions and cheese - much as a potato skin would be served. With sour cream and salsa for dipping, they were very good. The appetizer serving was so large, that it could easily feed 4-6. We were only able to eat less than half, but took the rest with us to nibble on later.

I opted for a Caesar Salad (as my appetite was gone after the Mountain) but chose the large ($6.95) thinking it wasn't going to be too large. I was wrong. I should have chosen the small salad. It came with a liberal amount of fresh parmesan cheese sprinkled over the fresh greens, and smooth tasting dressing. My husband ordered The Drayman (Guinness Marinated Bistro Fillet topped with Onion Rings. Served with choice of potato and vegetable for $17.95). He thoroughly enjoyed the meal, and especially the steamed asparagus which was very fresh and flavorful.

You can pay an extra $8/pp when you check in, if you want to have breakfast prepared for you in the morning. We did. Breakfast consisted of various choices (you have a menu to fill out and turn in). We both had cheese omelets with crisp bacon on the side. My husband also had sauteed tomatoes and mushrooms (served on the side) which he placed on top of his omelet. Fruit juice, toast, and coffee rounded out the meal. It was a great way to start the day.

We would highly recommend this Inn/Restaurant when traveling in Bethel. The rates were better than some of the local resort hotels, and the food was delicious.

Room Tip: The Chumleigh had a window facing the street. We had to keep the window closed at night because of t...
