My husband and I spent one night here while passing through Maine on a leaf-peeping trip to New England. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-appointed, although very dark. The lighting, in keeping with the overall atmosphere of the inn, was quite dim which worked well for ambiance, but made reading tour books and maps a bit difficult. We stayed in the Chumleigh Room, which was quite cozy with an electric fireplace (which we didn't need) and a fan in the closet (which we did need, and were thrilled to find). However, the bathtub had a ring around it, and was very slow to drain.
We had dinner in The Jolly Drayman (first floor) and it was absolutely FABULOUS! We decided to have an appetizer and chose "The Mountain" which was HUGE. The best way to describe it is mini hashbrowns piled high with bacon bits, green onions and cheese - much as a potato skin would be served. With sour cream and salsa for dipping, they were very good. The appetizer serving was so large, that it could easily feed 4-6. We were only able to eat less than half, but took the rest with us to nibble on later.
I opted for a Caesar Salad (as my appetite was gone after the Mountain) but chose the large ($6.95) thinking it wasn't going to be too large. I was wrong. I should have chosen the small salad. It came with a liberal amount of fresh parmesan cheese sprinkled over the fresh greens, and smooth tasting dressing. My husband ordered The Drayman (Guinness Marinated Bistro Fillet topped with Onion Rings. Served with choice of potato and vegetable for $17.95). He thoroughly enjoyed the meal, and especially the steamed asparagus which was very fresh and flavorful.
You can pay an extra $8/pp when you check in, if you want to have breakfast prepared for you in the morning. We did. Breakfast consisted of various choices (you have a menu to fill out and turn in). We both had cheese omelets with crisp bacon on the side. My husband also had sauteed tomatoes and mushrooms (served on the side) which he placed on top of his omelet. Fruit juice, toast, and coffee rounded out the meal. It was a great way to start the day.
We would highly recommend this Inn/Restaurant when traveling in Bethel. The rates were better than some of the local resort hotels, and the food was delicious.
