“skiing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

I stayed here with my team for some ski races and it was great. Rooms were clean and comfortable, and the food was good. They have a wax room for prepping skis which was really helpful. It's a convenient location for skiers, about 5 minutes from Sunday River and a half hour from Black Mountain. There was nothing extraordinary about the place, but I was very happy here.

“A Belated High Five to Al and Kathy and the Inn at Rostay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

Just doing a little retro-advising as it's -30 out, dark, cold and time for catch up on reviews.
Stayed at the Inn at the Rostay many, many times over about an 8 year period, and was always treated like one of the family. Be sure to ask about the name! No "Para ingles, presione numero dos" in this reservation "process". It usually consists of a quick phone call or, on a number of occasions, I'd leave a message and get a call back! And "duh", have your card ready...they have lives too. Or do what's right and offer to call back to keep their phone open for business.

When I travelled and arrived late there was always an accomodation for getting the key somewhere on my own and getting into a room. The food was always great; at that time the folks had a wonderful yellow lab that was a cheerful pal when packing/unpacking the truck; the food was great; Al and Kathy were great hosts and put me onto a number of ski trails literally out the back door of the building...couldn't ask for more.

Noted one guy whining about "bugs". Dude, it's the country. Not Boston, where nothing survives the pesticide hosing the "Commonpoverty" demands. I've stayed in places in Mass where the stench of pesticide in the room made me go to another place. And hey, they're ladybugs. They're a sign of "life" not "filth". Sheesh...

Anyway..the rooms are cozy and tastefully rustic, quilts, puffy pillows, always some kind of table or couch to pile things on. Note: the bathrooms only have showers (at least thae rooms I always stayed in), but there was a great hot tub on property for the soak-needy. Even though the timestamp says I was there in 2011, the last time I stayed there was in the late fall of 2008, but I have full confidence that so long as the same folks are running it, there's nothing different now than then. Do yourself a favor and drop in, and make a friend or two while enjoying a trip back to the "Mom and Pop Hotel" era sans the all-too-common indifference, institutional coldness and money-first environment that permeates most chain hotels or resorts.

Room Tip: I was always partial to the rooms directly facing the road on the "single" level part of t...

“Charming, Clean, Quiet”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2011

We had two rooms in the motor court section of the hotel. The room decorations made these Californians feel like we had arrived in New England, charming. The rooms are older, smallish hotel size but well maintained and clean. The owner is friendly, helpful and also charming. For it's kind of lodging, it's well done. We think this is the best renovation of an old style hotel we have visited. Breakfast is served at a very reasonable charge.

If you like handmade quilts, the office has local work for sale in the office.

“Rude”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 April 2011

Unfortunately, I can't actually speak to the accommodations. However, I can speak to the rudeness and lack of customer service when trying to book a reservation. I called today to try to book a room for a June wedding. I gave someone named Kathy my information and when she asked for my credit card, I realized it wasn't in my wallet--I'd left it downstairs. I ran as fast as I could to get it while keeping the phone to my ear--it couldn't have taken me even 20 seconds--and heard her mocking me to someone else for not being ready with my card, ending with "Well, DUH!" When I told her I could hear her, she said a quick "sorry" but at that point I had no desire to say there anymore. Ended up booking a nicer room elsewhere. Should I have had my card ready? Sure. But if someone can't manage to be kind for even 20 seconds when they think I'm not listening, then I definitely don't want to find out about the rest of their customer service. So word of advice, innkeepers: if you're going to mock your customers, try to cover up the phone receiver first. I feel bad for the friends of mine who might have already booked this hotel for the wedding.

“Best French Toast in Bethel Maine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 March 2011

We enjoyed a wonderful weekend at The Rostay. Kathy and Al are wonderful innkeepers. Very accomodating and friendly people, as well as Ruger the dog. Very quiet, peaceful and cozy. A great place for families. Convienantly located close to the slopes as well as to the town. Our favorite thing was the cozy dining room and fabulous french toast! We will definately return to the Rostay. Thank you Kathy and Al for making our weekend a great one!
