“Awesome vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We had a great time at the Telemark Inn. Leo, Alex, and Steve were awesome hosts and clearly go to great lengths to keep their animals and guests happy. Every meal was wonderful, the house was clean, and there is plenty to do.

We decided to do a dog sledding package, but even though there was no snow while we were there, Steve was more than accommodating and let us train the puppies, ride the horses, drive a carriage, and go hiking. Plus we had plenty of time to hang out with the dogs and take teams out with the ATV.

Every single dog was incredibly sweet and sociable. I'd definitely recommend this place and would go back. Just a warning: this place is VERY off the beaten path, and I'd double check the weather if you're going to be driving there.

“Great wilderness adventure”

The staff were very friendly and gracious hosts. There's plenty to do (especially if you like spending time with dogs!) dog-sledding, horseback riding, carriage riding, hiking, or relaxing in the cabin. If you're active, you can run with younger dogs to train them for dog-sledding, and if you'd rather take it slow, you can hang out with cats, llamas, horses, or sit in sled and enjoy the ride. Every last one of the 70-odd dogs was friendly, as the staff go to great lengths to make sure all their animals are well cared for and happy.

I would advise visitors to read weather forecasts and pack accordingly. I happened to go during a particularly cold week in January, and I was very glad that I packed extra warm clothes.

“Hummingbirds, chipmunks, sled dogs and sushi!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2011

We had an extraordinary stay at this extraordinary lodge, formerly owned by the establisher of Prudential Insurance as present-day owner Steve will inform you. If we weren't so pressed for time to "do New England" in a one-week road trip, we certainly would have stayed.
Using tripadvisor we specifically searched for an off-the-beaten-track experience and BOY did we get what we bargained for! Driving up the -ironically named- King's Highway in our compact was quite the adventure. Signs were curiously absent, except for the sign that said "BUMP". We laughed seeing as the road had plenty of bumps the 4 miles before the sign!
When you do find the wilderness lodge -literally at the end of the road- you will find an amazing place. A quiet, peaceful haven in the forested heights of the White Mountains and some 70 well-behaved huskies as a welcoming comittee.
The lodging is luxurious in period/wilderness style, being a former millionaire's lodge. We dropped by unannounced and were invited in without any hassle. The owners live in the same premises and personally we found this very homey and warm. That evening we could even partake in a nice social gettogether with the neighbors (living some distance away as you can well imagine). All in all an experience my wife and I will never forget. Especially the humming of hummingbirds waking us in the morning! Special. Very special indeed. Thanks for a great, albeit brief, stay.

“Perfect getaway....a place where nature abounds and animals rule”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2010

I spent the most enjoyable fall week at the Telemark Inn. it is very inviting.....warm & cozy, very peaceful, secluded yet not too remote. Leo is a great cook......best eggs I have ever had in my life! The fall foliage was breathtaking! If you are an outdoor enthusiast & animal lover, you must check this place out! We hiked around the area and the gorgeous Grafton Notch region. Now that is a hike.....definitely not for amateurs! We paddled the Androscoggin on a beautiful, sunny fall day. It was incredible!
Hanging out with Steve & Leo was the best part! You will never meet two more passionate people, who work really hard & are totally dedicated to their animals! I had a blast learning from them about the horses, llamas, and sled dogs! I thought I knew a lot about Alaskan Huskies, until a little female pulled me right down in the dirt! Their power & passion is unbelievable! It took me awhile to get the hang of the whole "mushing thing", and I definitely have a long way to go. It is hard, physical work and not for sissies, but I loved every minute of it!! I can't wait to go back in the winter & really learn how to handle a team!
Staying at the Telemark Inn with Steve & Leo is an experience I will never forget! This place had such a profound effect on me that I want to have a camp there someday. If you are looking for a five-star experience in beautiful Maine, this is the place for you!!

“Incredible getaway to beautiful nature, animals and wilderness lodge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

The Telemark Inn is one of my favorite getaways on the East Coast. I've gone several times over the past few years and love it each time. Nestled against the White Mountains National Forest, I was able to hike out directly from the Lodge on a 6 mile loop to a granite crest that overlooked breathtaking valleys and forests. The Lodge is serenity defined: peaceful, tranquil, welcoming, warm and very inviting. Plus there's tons to do here, or just sit on the porch. Last visit, I learned to garden, care for horses, build a flagpole, played w/ puppies (a few times), built fires, looked through powerful binoculars at stars and had amazing meals in a family style setting. Sunday was extremely hot and we went to a local, really fun natural river/pond to swim. The proprietors Steve and Leo are great people and really warm and welcoming, and are easy to befriend. I live/work in NYC and every time I return from the Telemark Inn I'm glowing for a few weeks. Go! :)
