A whole new perspective for HIExpress - apparently some are nothing more than a Budget Inn with a higher price tag. When we initially opened the door to the room we were assaulted with a smell of "musty meets cheap deodorizer", it was so bad my kids refused to go into the room initially. A few minutes later I turned on the water to wash my hands in the sink and saw brown water coming out and the stench of rotten eggs. After calling the front desk, I confirmed that they were "well water only" and there was a sulfur problem. I was amazed that this hotel would choose not to put a water purification system in place, I have stayed in many third world countries that had better water treatment capabilities. My next issue arose after I wanted some ice - the one my floor (2nd) was out of commission, so I went down the the lobby only to find it too was out of commission. Approached the desk again, only to be told "oh sorry i should have told ya earlier - the only one that works is on the 3rd floor". The final straw came at 2 AM when the in room refrigerator decided to have a malfunction and made an annoying sound. I jumped out of bed and turn the dial to off, but the thing keep making noise (apparently the auto defrost function was kicking in) so I had to pull the dresser away from the wall to unplug before getting any resolution. Sent a note to the Corp HQ about this shining example, they proceeded to send a generic response about forwarding my comments to the hotel. It has been a month and no other communication occurred so I can only assume that the franchise has the latitude to choose its own destiny in these matters, as a result I am no longer willing to take a gamble with this chain. Shame on me most likely buying into the HIE image. I will be limiting my stays to the Drury and Marriot establishments in the future (I find them to be far more consistent).
