I would have to say the Myrtles definitely lives up to the spooky end of it's reputation, however, it is also a beautiful bed and breakfast with great service, amazing staff, and has a delicious restaurant on location to boot.
My husband and I stayed in the he Judge Clarke Woodruff Suite as part of our honeymoon. The room is large, and pretty. It was clean, and very nice. It has a large, spacious bathroom with a tub, and a single sized bed across from the bathroom in a small, separate room from the main bedroom suite. This suite also has access to the staircase and the "haunted mirror" after the close of the day.
The home is old, so don't expect showroom condition on anything in this house, or the rooms, however, for the age of the home it is really, really nice.
Every single staff member from the manager to the front desk associates that we came into contact were nothing but friendly, and extremely hospitable. As a matter of fact the lady who was the tour guide/worked the front desk saw us through the window at the restaurant while we were having supper (she was walking to her car to go home) she stopped and waved to us. We smiled and waved back.
The property and house are very beautiful. we enjoyed exploring the house and surrounding grounds very much.
Breakfast was very good. There was a buffet set up for guests in the morning. The spread included grits, scrambled eggs, ham, biscuits, an assortment of preserves, butter, and butter pecan spreads, fresh fruit, blueberry scones and cranberry scones, coffee, orange juice, milk, and cereals. The manager, and several staff members were present during breakfast, all of whom were very sociable, nice, and just plain good to talk to.
On the spooky note, there were several occasions where we heard knocks one knock then the other, creaking floor boards, footsteps downstairs, footsteps seeming to come from the staircase. We were the only people staying in that part of the house, so where those noises came from, we have no idea. There was only one other couple staying in the house that night, and they didn't have access to our area. We were creeped out, but that's what we were looking for, so no complaints from us! My brother sent us with some "ghost hunting" equipment that he has, he does it for a hobby. We had an EMF detector that spiked over 9.0 in our room several times near the bed, not by any electrical ligting, or outlets, then would go back to 0. It was very quick, I wanted a photo so bad, but failed to capture it. The mirror downstairs showed a continuous 0.2 EMF reading after being held there for over a minute. The other piece of equipment we had picks up on inaudible voices/sounds and reads them aloud. There were 2 sets of words that really gave us a start. The first was in our room, and randomly it read to us the word "knife". We asked who/what the knife was for, it then said "ourselves". We then asked where were you cut, it read, "foot". Maybe that was the spirit of a runaway slave who had been punished for running away, and then executed. The last word it announced was "mad". That spooked us out fairly well. Later that night, we were out on the porch, playing with the cats. I said out loud, " I wonder if the children play with these cats too." The program that we kept running from earlier then read out the words "provide" then the word "toy". Maybe it was the voice of the children trying to communicate. Very spooky!!
Great stay with little to no rest, a feeling of anxiety in a beautiful setting, and my husband and I clinging to each other as if our lives depended on it due to the fear of the unknown. Haha spooky honeymoon adventure=Successful!
