My college-aged son and I enjoyed our stay at the Comfort Inn in Morgan City. It is one of the three big “new” hotels on the highway entering town, and is as reliable as one would expect from the reasonably high standards of a chain hotel system. Our room was immaculate, with sheets, mattresses, and beds all crispy-new. The bathroom was clean with good cotton towels. My son appreciated the free Wi-Fi Internet available in the rooms and lobby. There even was a business center with two complimentary computers for those not otherwise bringing their own. What separated the Morgan City facility from the routine of chain hotel sameness, however, were the people working there. The evening desk clerk lady was old-South gracious in checking us in and ensuring that we had everything we needed for the evening. Somehow, she was there again in the morning, greeting the guests and hustling around making coffee and replenishing the breakfast supplies in the same kind spirit. It was also great to find complimentary copies of the Wall Street Journal to read while enjoying coffee and a good (though, largely pre-prepared) breakfast. Because my son had to be in a job orientation program that morning, I had to wait in the hotel until the [thankfully late] noon check-out time. The cleaning staff workers were happy and friendly, and gracefully accommodated my staying later than the usual hit-the-road-early guests. Plus, upon leaving, the desk-clerk who checked me out was just as friendly and caring as her predecessor the night before. My assumption was that Morgan City would be just a rough oil-patch town with mom and pop motels. In fact, it turned out to be a pretty nice-looking Southern small town with a fascinating history and interesting buildings. We enjoyed the benefits of being all “new and clean” at the Comfort Inn, while otherwise enjoying the old-timey home cooking of the local restaurants and the old town area along the levee walls of the river basin. When you visit in Morgan City, you’ll certainly know you’re not in Dubuque!
