We have stayed at this hotel for the last 20 or 25 years when visiting New Orleans. It is an aging property, but management is working diligently to keep it up. Although the outside temperature was down to 42, our room air conditioner was still set to cooling when we entered the room. After we unpacked, we thought it would be wise to check out the heat function. As it began to heat, it made a really strong odor of heated dust like you get at home when you first turn on your furnace. Unfortunately, this set off the extremely loud room smoke alarm. We turned off the heat, but the smoke alarm kept beeping loudly a couple of times a minute. The front desk clerk offered us another room, which we accepted, but we had arrived in late evening and didn't relish the work of moving to another room. We had to move because the smoke alarm kept making loud noise. We did without heat in our new room, and because of the good bed covers provided did not freeze. This hotel used to give you 4 cups of regular coffee and 4 cups of decaf in their excellent room coffee makers, but now they have put in one cup at a time coffee makers and give you 2 cups of regular and 1 cup of decaf, period. How stingy can you get? There is no half-and-half creamer; only powdered imitation cream for your room coffee. Only the powdered stuff in the lobby too. No grab bars in the shower, a limitation for older guests, but plenty of hot water. I have already made a reservation to stay here again, but I will need to get my coffee elsewhere. If I have any more problems with an over active smoke alarm, I will leave this place for good. That is a shame, because we really like La Quinta.
