My wife and I slipped away for a nice three day weekend trip to Covington in September 2008. In a word - FANTASIC !
The trip started as we arrived at the Blue Willow, which was just perfect. Maureen met us at the gate and showed us to the Orleans Suite. This wonderful upstairs loft comes complete with huge bath and jacuzzi tub, a feather soft King size bed, a summer / winter fireplace, and a small kitchenette. Off the bedroom is your own private balcony with a couch and chaise lounge.
The grounds are neatly manicured with fragrant flowers, and huge oaks with castilles of spanish moss. The courtyard hides a nice big outdoor jacuzzi - where we watched the moon float over the sleepy little town.
We had a perfectly wonderful stay at Blue Willow and thoroughly enjoyeed our stay in Covington.
Note: Since their is so little on the Covington Forum, I'm adding our food excursions - which were amazing.
We had a wonderful lunch at Coffee Rani. We were hesitant to go here at first, as we assumed it would be a typical coffee shop menu, but boy, were we wrong. The menu was extensive with pasta, sandwhiches, salads, grilled entrees and more. My wife had the Crawfish Monica - a wildly delicious crawfish spagetti with great garlic butter cream sauce. It was fantastic. I had the Tuscan Chicken. Grilled chicken breast with provolone cheese, sundried tomato, artichoke hearts and sauteed spinach. We were very happy with our lunch here.
For dinner we slipped away to La Provence in Lacombe, about a twenty minute drive south. Our meal at La Provence was one of the finest meals we have ever had! (I added a review to La Provence.) I just cannot say enough good things about it.
My wife did a lot of shopping, and really enjoyed UAL, a high end liquidator clothing shop on I90. This was an interesting place, and despite my utter reluctance to shop, I was intrigued with their prices. (She got several Prada style dresses for 75 to 85 percent off). Granted this took the costs of a few dresses from a staggering $800 to a much better $100-$200 range.
If you are fortunate enough to travel on the last Friday of the month, be sure to enjoy the downtown "Final Friday" festival. Streets are blocked off and stores stay open late.
We ended with a trip to a few nightclubs, had a few beers at the Tap Room - nice southern style burger bar with 30 or so beers on tap, and a great band the night we visited. The Green Room was a bit more raucous, with a 7 piece brass band playing a mixture of rock and jazz. Despite the heavy lingering cigarette smoke, we had a few drinks and danced a bit before moving back to the hot tub at Blue Willow.
I really, really had a great time in Covington. I felt like I was half way between Mayberry and the set of Steel Magnolias. In short, a great time, and we will definitely return soon.
