On a recent, solo cross-country trip from Seattle to Boston, I decided to detour through the South and see Kentucky. I didn't want to spend the night in a generic hotel in either Louisville or Lexington, and instead felt like touring some of the bourbon distilleries for which the area is known.
Versailles is ideally located near several of the distilleries on the "bourbon trail". A quick internet search on the road yielded this delightful inn. I was able to make a booking online, and the inn's proprietors (Alder and Gill Blackburn) were extremely responsive in their e-mail confirmation. My expected arrival time changed several times during the day, and they were most accommodating.
On arrival, I was greeted by Alder who gave me a fascinating historical tour of the Inn, which has a rich past dating back to pre-civil war times. This was followed by an invitation to a glass of bourbon on the porch!
I had booked the "Traveler's Room", which seemed reasonably priced (indeed, the entire inn is very reasonable for the type of accommodation one receives). It's large, very private, and includes a Jacuzzi in the room, as well as a small kitchen and dining area. Every detail was well thought out and I found myself saying "wow, they even thought of that!" several times. The room next to it, "Auntie's Attic", is very large, and I would call it more of a suite with two rooms and a palatial bathroom, again with jacuzzi. Both these rooms are a little separate from the house and have their own entry, which I liked.
I'm not usually a B&B type of traveler - this Inn eclipsed my expectations. I'd noticed that EVERY review on Tripadvisor was a 5-star review, so I figured it was a safe bet. I was right!
Breakfast is included in the rate, and is expertly crafted by Alder and Gill. They are absolutely delightful and I would come back just to spend some more time in their company! Both are knowledgeable about the area, having lived there for several years, and are able to give good advice about local eateries, interesting happenings and of course the distilleries.
Overall, my only complaint about the stay is that it wasn't long enough. I had budgeted one night and I would have loved to have extended my trip here.
