I have been a regular guest at the Aleksander House since 2004, my most recent stay being in Oct 2011. A friend of mine was planning a trip to Louisville and I recommended the Aleksander House. A couple of days later, she mentioned that she had gone on TripAdvisor and wondered if I had recommended the right place. I went to TripAdvisor to check myself. I am leaving this review in response to the recent review by "SuzyQ1962" because I honestly believe it to be unfair.
First, I can't help but notice her review, though written on 2/10/12, is in reference to a stay "last summer"??? Okay well, guess it took a while to really think about it or something. That said, I think it's fairly obvious that this person had a personal issue with the innkeeper. And speaking of the innkeeper...an innkeeper, who's livelihood depends on guests, invites you into their home and then yells at you and displays "strange behavior"? Please! Contrary to Suzy's remarks, the innkeeper (Nancy) is pleasant, accommodating and welcoming. She leaves fresh cookies, granola bars and hot tea and coffee out all day and always takes the time to recommend places for dinner or things to do that are going on in the city...She tends to go out of her way to make one's stay nice and comfortable, way beyond what many Bed and Breakfasts do; this is a home after all not a hotel, which is the point in staying at a B&B in the first place!
The suite is a lovely set of rooms that accommodates two friends or couples (a bed in each room and a private entrance per room). The private bathroom is appropriately located in the hallway so that each person, or couple, staying in the suite can have easy access...hello? If the bathroom was in one of the adjoining rooms, that would be pleasant (for someone) in the middle of the night...not! (again, B&B, not hotel). Katharine's room, my favorite, has one of those high beds with fluffy white sheets and comforters that you just want to jump in and settle in with a good book and a cup of tea. The house overall is beautiful and warm and the breakfasts are excellent; a far cry from cold granola and a danish!
Take it from someone who's had multiple experiences staying here, Aleksander House is a beautiful Victorian brownstone with comfortable rooms and good energy. Please give the 40+ 4-5-star reviews the benefit of the doubt before you pass judgement. Oh, and did I mention it's dog friendly?
