“Loved it! Save roadside Americana and stay here!”

I've been to the ones in Holbrook AZ and Rialto CA, and just completed the trifecta by staying at this one - the oldest, and arguably most original, Wigwam Village [#2]. It's not the prettiest - the one in Rialto has been extensively restored and earned awards etc as a result. This one, however, has the original pine & woven cane furniture from the 1930's which the other 2 do not. The current owners say they're putting all the profits back into the motel in the coming years, but it must be pretty tough as it was only 1/2 full when I was there over New Year's weekend, and is probably less full at other times. It's sort of out-of-the-way and not along Route 66 or off an interstate so they surely get less traffic, but I hope more folks stay here and in the process contribute to the restoration. Cave City itself has a lot to offer by way of antique shops and antique malls - lots of great browsing and many good deals to be had. Of course Mammoth Caves and other attractions abound.

The room itself was larger than you'd think - mine had two double beds, a small desk with coffee maker, an extra chair, an old radiator that I doubt worked any longer (and thus a window AC / heater unit filled the bill), and a very quaint bathroom with small (non-original) vanity / sink, and original shower (which had great water pressure), and toilet. Original tile on the walls and floors.

No telephones, but they do have slow and spotty WiFi. Cable TV with about 80 channels. Not many dining choices nearby, and the town shuts down pretty early.

I like that each unit is a totally separate "mini house" and you won't hear, or bother, your neighbors.

Could use some updating without losing the originality of the place - it's a delicate balance, and you can tell that the current owners are really trying with the limited resources available. They keep it very clean and tidy, and it's a very good deal ($40+ per night) to stay at what is arguably one of the most iconic of American roadside attraction / motels.

My one and only complaint is that the window heat unit would make an incredible racket every few hours - had to give it a good thump to get it to settle down.

Room Tip: Pay an extra $5 to stay at a double room towards the back (away from the road) - it quiets down at n...

“Cozy Couple Get Away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

I have always wanted to stay at this Wigwam Village, as we live in Bowling Green, Ky, we decided to have some couple time away. There are photos on their website so I kind of knew what to expect. We loved it. It is what it is, and not for everyone. If you require the ritz, it isn't for you. If you want amenities of a chain hotel, again, not for you. This is about going back in time and living the way it was THEN. I read some reviews on here after our return and find it silly to read some of the comments such as the furniture is old and the rooms are "dated" Really? That's the IDEA. The furniture is the original handmade hickory furniture, restored from the 1930's when this novelty was built! It was rustic and charming. Yes it's small, to be expected. It was bare bones with no luxuries, kind of like roughing it camping but we knew that going in and that's what we wanted. No phones, perfect for US. The bed was VERY soft and comfortable in Wigwam #11. Loved the antique furniture~woven cane and carved hickory wood bed and it was sturdy. Had a cute vanity/chair and chair. Linens were clean, we had the essentials, tint bars of soap, and shampoo packets. 2 towels and washcloths. TV worked. Has a small window air conditioner and the heat was a small space heater, which we actually turned off awhile. (love keeps you warm) The floors were a bit cold, the room could benefit from a few throw rugs. There was someone at the office when we checked in around 5 pm, and next day we went to the back house that has an office sign, where the owners actually live. Gift shop was sparse but we weren't there for overpriced souvenirs anyway, We went for dinner at Cracker Barrel after checking in, and stopped at Dollar General for a candle, the room did have a slight musty smell but once inside, we didn't notice it anymore... linen scented candle helped and added a romantic glow;) There is a small coffee maker in room, and ice available as well as a drink machine by gift shop. If you stay on a Saturday night there is an auction downtown Cave City, found some bargains, amused by the ongoings and locals. It was a fun get away. We plan on doing it again. By the way, the hot water was HOT instantly. Got $5 off for paying cash. Room was $50.

Room Tip: wigwam #11 was good

Yes not the Ritz but my 10 year old and I still talk about it. In this day of chain hotels it is nice to stay someplace different! Let the kids know back in the 60/70's this was the way it was

“loved the idea, our son had to stay there.”

the idea was so cute. Always wanted to stay there. We went to mammoth caves and the surrounding area on our one last trip before school started back. This place was the one thing he kept talking about and drew a picture of it when he went back to school and the teacher asked them to draw what was the most memorable about their summer.
The floors were so dirty. We did stay two nights. I wish someone would fix them up to their potential. Anyway a good memory.

“A must do”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

Don't expect the Ritz here. This is basic lodging in an old, small room shaped like a tepee. Furniture is old and the bed sags but it's clean located next farm land with a train in the distance. The owner was friendly and complained about not raising prices since 2007. The place does need some TLC. TV reception was poor as was wifi. Driving distance to restaurants. It's a must do once. Been there, done that.
