My husband and I purchased the Doe Run Inn's "weekend package for two", hoping to get a couple days of peace and quiet after our wedding in Louisville. We couldn't have asked for a better time, and the price is unbeatable--just $219 covers a 2-night stay, plus 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts, and a lunch at the Inn's fantastic restaurant! The Inn is surrounded by idyllic scenery, and the rooms are cozy and charming, furnished with beautiful antiques. It doesn't have all the amenities of a hotel--no TV, not many toiletries (only soap and lotion, so bring your own shampoo), but I don't think anyone comes here looking to stay in the lap of luxury. The charm and tranquility of the place more than make up for anything the Inn lacks, though, and I think that's what most people are looking for if they come to stay at the Doe Run Inn.
Also, though the rooms are non-smoking, smokers can enjoy that the Inn's designated smoking area is a large, rustic porch that overlooks the creek. Some of the best moments of our weekend were out on that porch, where we saw deer, fireflies, and LOTS of hummingbirds.
The staff--the folks behind the desk, the waiters and waitresses in the restaurant, even the cooks--were nothing but friendly and helpful through our entire stay. They made us feel so welcome and looked after.
This is to say nothing of the restaurant, which serves up some of the best home cooking you're ever likely to taste! Nothing we ordered was anything short of delicious (I highly recommend the fried chicken!). The restaurant serves big helpings and has several buffets throughout the week, including a seafood buffet on Friday and a breakfast buffet on Sundays (FYI: With the exception of the Sunday Breakfast [because you can't order off the menu that day], the buffets aren't totally covered by the weekend package, but you can get them for a very reasonable $5 extra). All lunches and dinners come with an order of nosh: double fried bite-sized pieces of cornbread, served with a warm brown sugar and molasses dipping sauce. Most dinners, I believe, also come with a small salad; if you're so inclined, I strongly recommend trying out the homemade blue cheese dressing!
Though we're moving to New York soon, I have no doubt that on our return trips to Kentucky we'll stop in at the Doe Run Inn again.
