After researching the most suitable and closest accommodations for the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, I booked The Federal House at the Rosemark Haven in Bardstown for my friends from England, my niece and myself. Judging by the website, it appeared to be a delightful and comfortable place even though it was going to be long drive to and from the games. I have never felt more unwelcome at an inn or B&B ever. It seemed from the start that we were a bother and an inconvenience. (Not to mention that they increased the room rates because of the event which was an hour away). We did arrive later than expected from St. Louis because of unforeseen circumstances and then had difficulty finding the location because of road work. We were surprised at the lack of hospitality and felt like children being told all the rules and regulations. It was more about what we could and could not do than extending hospitality. While we had privacy in the detached Federal House, the furnishing were sparse, it was full of cobwebs, smelled of natural gas, was lacking in the basic necessities (such as adequate toilet paper for 5 people) and, bedding provided for the fifth person (it claims to sleep five), was a roll-away bed. Breakfast was interesting: it was not terrible but not the most palatable morning meal. There was no "choice" whatsoever (even if there was diet or allergy constrictions) and, for example, if you wanted hot tea, you had to serve yourself from the water tank in the entry of the main house. In the dining room, the carafes were not even marked for the coffee - reg. and decaff.. Breakfast was lacking the basic general offerings of juices, fruit, yogurt and cereal. We were not allowed to bring in our own alcoholic beverages for our own private quarters, but we could purchase wine and beer from the establishment but only during their restricted hours. Fines were in place if you disobeyed the rules. Judging by the framed and dated magazine and newspaper articles hung in the main house, I would say that the current owners and managers are resting on the laurels of the previous owners and continuing to sell the establishment as what it was in the past. It seems, too, that if my general research is correct, Rosemark Haven is on the market to sell. Perhaps this explains the lack of general care and hospitality. In the three nights and three days that we were there, we never felt that we were welcome guests or that they were willing to or wanted to meet any of our needs. Very disappointing as an American host to foreign visitors.
