My partner and I were driving across the country and decided to drive through Kansas to see my family in Topeka. On our way to Colorado, we got caught in a storm and decided to try and stay in a hotel. We tried a couple of hotels that were full before we happened upon the Budget Q hotel. The dead house sparrow lying by the front door should have been all the warning we needed but we were tired and it wasn't safe to drive on the highway anymore. I went inside alone to check us in and the guy that came to the front desk was in nothing but his underwear and a t-shirt. It was a little off-putting but since it was 11pm, I figured he must have been asleep. He just looked at me and rudely said "yeah?" and I said "we were looking for a room for the night." I asked him how much it was, he told me and I went outside to confer with my partner. When I went back in, the guy wasn't there anymore and a middle-aged woman in her nightgown came out. She just stared at me. I said "the fellow who was out here before was helping me" and she snapped at me "I'm the manager, what do you need?" I repeated that we were looking for a room for the night. She asked for my ID and credit card. She looked at my ID and said my first and last name in a very mocking tone (I have a traditional Mexican first and last name). It was clear this woman was being extremely racist towards me but at this point, I was too exhausted to care. We went to the room and it reeked of stale cigarettes, the decor looks like it hadn't been changed since the 1970's. I was terrified of bed bugs but was trying to keep calm. Then we saw the roaches, all over the floor, in the bathroom, everywhere. I immediately picked up our bags from the floor and we went back to the front desk. The lady came back out and snapped "what?" to us. I complained about the roaches to which she said "its that time of year." My partner said "we just want a refund, we'll find somewhere else to stay." At that point, we didn't care if we had to sleep in the tiny Honda we were driving, we just wanted to get out of there. The woman said she would void the transaction but refused to give me a receipt (I checked my bank later and she did in fact void it, I was skeptical that she actually did it).
I agree with the other comments made that this place should be condemmed. It was probably the grossest place that I've ever seen and I can't believe I was desperate enough to almost stay there. We ended up waiting out the storm in a closed gas station and found a Days Inn 20 miles down the highway that seemed like a Hilton in comparision. I wouldn't make my worst enemy stay at this place!
