I wanted a suite-kind-of-hotel and Hillon offered a good rate in this area. So, I chose the Homewood Suites Overland Park. It was just all right. As one reviewer noted, it is situated in a safe and quiet area. It is just off of Metcalf Avenue which is a main thoroughfare through Overland Park. It's a convenient location because you can find eveything you need in a more than reasonable radius, including easy access to the 435 and the Overland Park Convention Center. Parking was free. I booked a one-bedroom suite at a rate of $99. The room included a full-kitchen (stove with two burners). However, breakfast and an evening reception are included in the price (and really "nothing to write home about.") Breakfast attendant was apologetic when I handed her my juice glass, which had a small chip on the lip. As others have noted, the suites are slightly outdated. However, for $99, this was not an issue to me. The free Internet functioned fine, as did the television. Big bathroom, with plenty of counter space. Good bath towels, shower pressure, and water temperature. One bedside lamp did not work, however. So, I exhanged it with the one on the dresser. Though the stay was OK, it was marred by the fire alarm going off THREE times on my last night there between 11pm and midnight. Good thing I was still awake, coherent, and that I carry earplugs. Several us were in the hallway outside of our rooms when the desk clerk came rushing by explaining that she had to go up to the roof to see if there really was a fire up there. We learned later from her (when we decided to get dressed and move outside the building after the third alarm) that their system had malfunctioned and they were calling someone in from outside to ensure that the alarm would not go off again. (So, did that mean that if there had been a fire later, the system would not detect it?) I'd been in a similar situation at another hotel years ago and that property made an announcement through their emergency system that it their alarm was false and we did not have to evacuate. It is unfortunate that this notification system doesn't exist in all hotels. I was also surprised that there wasn't a note of apology/explanation distributed to the guests the morning after and that no one said anything as I checked out. Based on this event, I will stay at a different Hilton property the next time I have business in Overland Park.

Dear JRLAW,
I appreciate your candid feedback regarding your stay with us. We strive to make sure each guest has a rewarding experience and I apologize for the fire alarm. Our system went off because our sprinkler system filled with water due to an air compressor failing. Unfortunately when this happens, the system cannot be silenced until the entire system is drained. We should have made better efforts to recognize and communicate how much of an inconvenience it was for each guest at some point during the incident, as our focus was on fixing the issue. Thank you for that suggestion. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed our spacious hotel suites, amenities and convenient location. Those in addition to our level of service, are what we are known for. If you find yourself traveling in this area again, I hope you give us another opportunity to demonstrate the quality and level of service we aim to provide.
Most sincerely,
Kimberly White
