Myy family and I booked a room at the Spring Hill Suites to attend a wedding and have to say that we were extremely pleased with the experience. before booking, I read several reviews and came to the conclusion that my biggest concern was going to be the train whistles from the tracks located across the river from the hotel. I opted to book the room because it is located so close to Lawrence's downtown which is FANTASTIC!
I felt that the room rates were competitive and the amenities were unequalled for places to stay in Lawrence. There is plenty of parking to include covered parking if you prefer. The doors to the entrance are automatic, which is a definite plus whether you're rolling in suitcases, or have a stroller or wheelchair to contend with. The trip to the lobby is slighly uphill, but it is only about fifty feet from the entrance to the lobby.
I was met by the desk clerk who repeatedly used my name (preceeded by Mister each time) during check in and she even called me by name as we were heading out after getting settled into our room.
The room is a suite and was immaculate. It has a nice, large and comfortable sofa, two mid sized color flat screen TV's, a desk with free internet, and a small kitchenette with a refrigerator and microwave. The beds were quite comfortable and there was a wide selection of pillows from ultra-soft to firm. All of the rooms have a view of the river which has a small waterfall. There are plenty of birds etc. to include a family of bald eagles that can be seen early in the morning and at dusk. The hotel also has a very nice fitness center and a swimming pool (didn't use it, but it is there).
Before checking out, we enjoyed a hot breakfast complete with waffles, breakfast meat and eggs, but many other choices are available. Unlike many other hotels where I have stayed, there was a staff member whose sole purpose was to make sure that none of the food choices ran out. Once it was time to leave, check out was quick and went smoothly and the clerk was very friendly and polite.
One of the best things about staying at the Spring Hill Suites is that the hotel is EASY (one block) walking distance to Lawrence's Massachusetts Street. Simply called "Mass Street" by the locals, the street is full of interesting shops and eateries. The city is extremely pedestrian- friendly, safe and clean. The locals are friendly too.
My final analysis is this- if you are a very light sleeper, the train whistles MIGHT bother you, but I never noticed them throughout the night, nor did my wife or child. When we talked with the other guests that attended the wedding during breakfast, not a single person made a comment about the trains. Everybody that we spoke with seemed to have really enjoyed their experience.
Room Tip: Be sure to ask the desk clerk for a recommendation for a "quiet room" if you're worrie...
