Okay, we stay at hotels an average of about 20 days a year with our son's traveling baseball team. We've seen the good, the bad and the average. The staff at this hotel are all-stars. Seriously. First, at check-in, the desk help bends over backwards to accomodate us after a very frightening encounter at the indy at which we had made reservations (see Trails West). Then, later that evening, we needed to wash our son's uniforms out and they simply let us do it using their equipment. Didn't try to charge us or even suggest any fees. I later looked at a card in the room where cleaning services were offered (oops, didn't see it before). I did give him a generous tip when we were checking out. The next day, they held our checkout time to see if our team won because if they did, we would need to stay a second night. Unfortunately, we lost, but the folks at the Microtel were nice either way. I talked to several people in housekeeping, the manager and the daytime desk person. They were all genuinely nice people. The breakfast was solid, (good waffles) and the room was perfect for us. It was 110 degrees outside, but our room was extremely comfortable. The little fridge in the room was pretty big too. If you just HAVE to have a pool, I'd suggest the water park (salt city) across from the Hutch Zoo. It's very reasonable (my wife and kids, 3 and 9, got in for $8.50 total.) We will definitely stay here the next time we come to Hutch.

As the clerk was talking to another clerk or a housekeeper, I entered the lobby of the motel. I stood at the counter for more than several minutes before I was even acknowledged. Our agency had made reservations, I asked for a smoking single if available. I was accomodated and given the room key card. My co-workers attending the training, had arrived earlier and several were in the hallway. They all stated their disatisfation with their rooms. I am a smoker and even I agreed the rooms had a strong smoke and unpleasant odor. My room, smoking and on a different floor from theirs, also was malodorous. When we arrived back at the motel after supper, I was ready to relax and watch TV. I do not smoke while laying in bed, so I was going to set at the desk, which had dried coffee drops and rings across it. I looked for an ash tray, which there was not. I called the front desk and the clerk told me they did not put them in the room and I would need to come get one from the front desk. I would have thought since my request was for a smoking room I would have been given an ash tray upon check in or at least made aware the rooms did not have ash trays. Unlike many others, I will go outside before smoking in a non-smoking room. I went directly down from the 3rd floor to the lobby to get an ashtray from the clerk. They were both outside smoking and their was an ashtray setting out on the counter. I assumed the clerk left it there for me since I had just called. The bottom sheet refused to stay on the bed throughout the night. I would put it back over the corner and it would pop right back off. The next morning I asked the desk to have them changed and explained to her the problem. She said, oh you got pop up's, or a similar remark trying to be funny, I guess. The sheets were changed but that was all that haad been attended to in the room. I did not even get clean towels nor were the soiled ones removed. We reported our dissatifaction to our corperate office who made the reservations for our group as the agency I work for has an account with the motel. If I could forward the reply from my email, I am sure you would be offended as well. I understand they were full and due to circumstances we had two who were unable to arrive the first night, but to respond with blame on the part of us who were unsatisfied with the accomodations, was inappropriate. I managed a motel for twelve years and the response was not acceptable. I plan on returning to Hutchinson on a personal trip and am meeting several family members who will also be needing rooms for the four day reunion. This would be six to eight rooms for five or six nights stay, needless to say Microtel will not be where any of us will be staying.
