“Good Value/Price Ratio”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 April 2010

This was the second time that my wife and i have stayed at this hotel in the last six months. Both stays were in King No Smoking rooms and both stays were quite pleasant. The room was quite clean and well furnished [refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, lounge chair and free ethernet broadband connection]. The, carpet was relatively new, pillow & beddings were good, and bathtub/shower were a single plastic unit that was clean, in good repair and had a upscale high flow shower head. The tub drained well. The flat screen television had a full compliment of cable stations. We were on the ground floor and the room was very quiet. The heater/air conditioner was relatively new and work well. Free internet service was provided by a ethernet connection that required a 6 foot ethernet cable. I had my own cable so I do not know if the front desk would provide a cable, but I would suspect they would. The hotel is conveniently located on the east side of town at the U.S. Hwy 50/ U.S. Hwy 83 bypass intersection. Restaurants and shopping are about 4 blocks away on Kansas Ave. The free breakfast included hot waffles, muffins, fruit, bagels, toast, cold and hot cereals, juice and coffee. Price with taxes was approximately $70 which is considerably less than the other 'brand' name hotels. Staff were quite pleasant.

“Nice hotel but has problems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2009

I have stayed at many of these little hotels throughout Kansas and the midwest and have found that many are amazingly clean and have great deals, so when I was asked to pay more than my company approves didn't think much of it. I parked across from the lobby and when I got out of the vehicle, I noticed for some reason that there were piles of dog feces in several locations around the parking lot. I know the hotel accepts pets but unfortunately not all owners feel the need to clean up after their pets so when you are a business such as a hotel it becomes your job. When I walked into the lobby to check-in there were 2 workers but didn't matter as there is only one check-in station so still had to wait as the female receptionist took two times to check-in the guest in front of me with a little bickering between the two employees. I then drove to my room and got out and you guessed it more dog feces in the parking lot right where you get out of your vehicles. Once checked in to my room, I flipped the light switch and a light came on but the room remained dark even with the open curtains. I then turned on every light in the room and there was still very little light. This created a very difficult working situation. I eventually got settled and connected to the internet to review the next day's work. The internet cable was less than 2 feet long and unless you sit on a bed right against the nightstand the cord isn't long enough. I did think the room was very clean and the shower head was great as were the 2 powerstrips for electrical connections. The major problem was the bed. The mattress was lumpy and the sheets were so scratchy that I woke up with a rash that still hasn't completely healed. It was two of the worst nights sleep I have had in a hotel in a long time. The room was very hot and I slept with the A/C on high all night and it was still hot for some reason. Check-out, which couldn't come soon enough, was quick and simple except for the employee having an infant lying on the floor behind the counter, which doesn't really bother me as everyone needs to work and if ever a place to bring a child to work the hotel would be the place. Anyway, if you head to Garden City, KS (and if you enjoy the outdoors with open spaces and friendly people then you need to visit Garden City) I would recommend paying the extra money and staying at the newer more modern hotels as this one just didn't cut it.

“Stay Away -- Far Away”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2007

From the moment we arrived at this place we wanted to leave. The hotel is located with a delapidated trailer park directly behind it and interstate on the remaining three sides.

We walked into our room and it was dirty and dungeon like and the generally atmosphere made my skin crawl, and that wasn't the only thing crawling -- the minute I saw bugs crawling on the carpet, we decided to leave.

The only good thing about this place was when I went back to front desk to inform them we were checking out, I fully expected to have to pay for the night but they refunded my money with no questions asked.

For only $5 more a night we got a room at the Holiday Inn Express down the road.

“Nothing fancy but clean and comfy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2006

We have been staying in this hotel or it's sister the Wheatlands since we started doing occasional business in Garden City 6 years ago. These motels are not fancy but they are very clean and comfortable. The rooms are pretty sound proof to voices but not to the sound of doors closing. The onsite 24 hour restaurant is not bad at all. Full hot breakfast is a plus, as are all three movie channels on the cable. All of the staff of this establishment are wonderful and go out of their way to help you in any way they can.
We have stayed in other hotels, like HI Express and Comfort Inn in Garden City, but we always return to the Red Baron or the Wheatlands. It is a good bang for your buck.
