“Basic hotel, plenty of external noise”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

I stayed there for a few nights on a recent business trip when the other reservation in town fell through. As other reviewers have stated, there is a train nearby that runs at all hours. I did year it both nights that I stayed there. There is also a fire house next door and one night they did have two alarms.

If you're looking for a basic hotel at a reasonable price (ask for the business rate) then this will fit your needs. There is nothing fancy here but several resturants are nearby and a department store across the road will help you with anything you forgot for your trip.

“Far from Interstate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2011

We took an unexpected trip in July and so made our reservations on the road without the usual preliminary research.
Location is definitely a consideration for the Quality Inn in Mason City, IA. We were traveling I-35 & it was eight miles (each way) out of our way to stay there. If you want to be in town and near the Medical Center, this is the place for you. There was also a very nice choice of restaurants in the area.
The room was clean and the bathroom was very nice. However, it was quite noisy with a train track nearby and ambulance sirens . The indoor pool was very small and cold. The pool area is dreary. We did not even bother to go in. There is no whirlpool.
The room had two double beds (not queen). Breakfast had the usual fare but they did also have some bacon.
It was the highest price motel on our four night trip and I did not see the justification for it. We would probably not stay there again.

“Basic Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2010

This is a very basic hotel. My room was clean, and I did not have any issues with it. The hotel does not have a business center nor a fitness center. There was a small swimming pool but no hot tub. Breakfast was very basic but adequate for basic needs. As other reviwers pointed out, train noise can really be an issue. The noise was constant during late evening hours and probably throughout the night. I am not a light sleeper so it didn't bother me much. Overall, it was an okay hotel considering the location and other choices available in the area.

“Bedbugs & trains... not a good night”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2010

Had an extended stay in what I thought was a clean hotel. Trains horns blared continuously at a nearby intersection throughout the night. Bitten by bed bugs. Staff said it was spiders & called an exterminator, but bites continued. Left hotel.

“A dismal stay in Mason City”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

Mason City is a town in need of a HGI or Hampton Inn. Having tried a couple other hotels in past and still looking for a better nights stay, I tried this location.

Pros:
- Very nice, very helpful front desk.
- A pile of cable tv channels
- Close to a few fast food places and next door to a gas station and tattoo parlor (not sure that is a pros).
- Air conditioning was pretty good.

Cons:
- My non-smoking smelled like an ashtray. Room (walls, blinds) coated with yellow nicotene.
- Huge iron shaped burn in the carpet... classy.
- Wall paper hanging loose in several areas.
- Lots of dings and scratches all around
- Large amount of mildew around the shower

I paid about $90 for a room that was probably worth about $50. I would not consider staying here again.
