“Great hotel. Very comfortable bed and very clean.”

My wife and I stayed at this hotel after attending a concert in Monticello, IA. I have always for the Choice Hotel chain of hotels to be clean and comfortable. This hotel exceeded our expectations! Aside from a shower head that didn't spray the best, the king size bed was very comfortable and the pillows were awesome. The room was very clean. The only thing that I did not like about the hotel was the lack of parking. Other than that, we would surely stay here again if we are in the area.

“Management needs to be changed.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2011

No soap and certainly no assistance shown by the staff. When asking for soap at the front desk were told their truck hadn't come in. No apology or even a hint that they were going to try to get some soap. A large Wal Mart across the street so why not go over and buy some soap until your shipment comes in instead of just walking away from your customer after saying we won't have soap until our truck comes in. Also watch your bill. They automatically put on a charge for using the safe and if you don't see it and ask for a credit, you will be billed. If you could get accommodations elsewhere you may want to consider it instead of staying at this location. Time for a management change. Should have paid attention to the other very negative comments.

“Stayed twice, won't go back...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2011

I stayed here twice within a week, once with my kids and once by myself. Our observations during the first stay: (1) good evening staff; personable and helpful. but (2) we were placed on a smoking floor (though in a non-smoking room) and the smell in the hallways was horrendous. Air conditioning in the hallway never worked while we were there, and wasn't on in the room when we arrived--took more than an hour to reach a bearable temperature. (3) Temperature in the pool area was also unbearably hot, and the jacuzzi wasn't working. (4) Beds weren't made by early afternoon. Room person left a note saying they have a policy not to make beds when you leave personal possessions on the bed (I've stayed in innumerable hotels and have never heard of such a policy!). This would have been okay if anyone had notified us of this policy. (5) We were left two towels for two nights...not enough...and shampoo was not replenished after first night.

Bad impression continued on subsequent visit: (1) You have to call desk staff on the phone to get them to come to the desk...Evidently the desk staff are also serving as cleaning staff. (2) Breakfast was inedible; coffee (albeit available all day) was undrinkable. (3) No soap was left in the room!!! (4) Staff were rude and unhelpful. When asked if there were any newspapers in the hotel, the answer was "no." (5) As I left, people (seemed to be both guests--one in his pajamas! and staff) were hanging around the entrance smoking. We will not be back.

“Friendly, Clean...no soap!!! Watch for safe charges!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2011

We had two rooms here July 30, 2011 with a heat index over 100. When arriving around 2 we were told rooms would not be ready until at least 3 as they were short on staff. We returned and checked in about 3:30. The hallways and elevators were so hot it was hard to breathe, heard their air was not working and we all know it happens from time to time. Glad it was working in the rooms. The night staff was very friendly. I had requested soap as there was none in our rooms was told they would leave some. When we returned from the fair at about 11PM there still was no soap. After another trip back down to the desk I was told they were out and have been for two days. Really? Are you kidding me? Do they know there is a Walmart across the street? I bet they have soap. No soap to shower with or wash hands. NOT ACCEPTABLE! Luckily I had packed a bar........

Also upon checking in I just happened to read the sheet that you have to initial and sign. Maybe all hotels do this now, but this if the first I have seen it. You are charged a $1/room for safe use. If you do not use the safe you may request a refund. SO if you do not take the statement that is outside your door in the AM to the front desk and ask for your $1 back - you do not get it. I call this a scam. They can charges movie rental after the fact.

The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable. Would I stay here again? NO! I feel they should have purchased soap from Walmart. That is terrible to not have, not to mention when it was soooo hot to take a shower with no soap but I just pictured everyone walking around that had not washed their hands......What did the sign in the bathroom say. If you have forgotten something........we will get it for you. HMMM!

“Air not included”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2011

This hotel was terrible. terrible customer service as well. We checked into our room on a day that had a heat index of 100.. When we arrived to the 3rd floor where are room was the hallway was deathly hot. Our rooms air was not turned on when we went in and it was like 90. It was a nice room. But when we complained the front desk told us that it was their policy not to run air conditioning in the room until the guest turn them on. We decided to go into the pool and come back hoping our room would be cooled. The pool was ok. it seemed kind of dirty and the baby pool with a slide that was advertised non existent. it did have a baby pool no slide. we went back to our room still not cooled. Call front desk and asked for the rollaway that we had asked for two times previously they brought it up and we explained that our air was not working he reset it. he said it would work now. we went out to eat came back and room still very very hot. At that point my husband went to the front desk and asked for our money back. Not once did the manager apologize or offer us a different room. I am sorry if you pay 160.00 for a room it should not be 90 degrees and when their is a heat advisory the air should already be turned on. Save your money and stay somewhere else down the road. It runined our time!!!
