Fort Madison doesn't have many lodging options. I'd read favorable reviews, so I decided to give this Knights Inn a shot. When I pulled into town and then into the motel, I wished I'd kept on looking. The room itself is dated, but large and clean. The bathroom needs work. It was the one place on my trip where I had time to take a soak in the tub, but the tub looked a little scary, so I didn't dare. They provided a microwave and refrigerator, but the refrigerator didn't keep anything cold, even when on the coldest setting. We had to ask for extra towels and when my husband requested an iron and ironing board (which is a standard amenitie in most hotels), it was a rickety table top version that was a pain to use. My husband said the breakfast looked pathetic, so we didn't bother with that. When I checked out, the desk clerk (owner?) was arguing with another guest. Although the guest was angry, the desk clerk's use of profanity and unprofessional behavior, especially in front of another guest, was the final straw for me. We pre-paid for our room and it was $51 a night. Even at that rate, I think I would rather pay more and stay somewhere else next time.
