“Field of Dreams”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

The Comfort Inn in Dyersville, Iowa is a very good place to stay. Prices are reasonable, rooms are clean, and service is very good. Located at the intersection of US HIghway 20 and State Highway 136, this motel is situated close to the City of Dubuque and several area tourist attractions including the Field of Dreams.

The small town of Dyersville is a quaint incredibly clean and beautiful Iowa town. Besides the Field of Dreams the town boasts the beautiful St. Francis Xavier Basilica and the National Farm Toy Museum. Dyersville is also close to historic Dubuque, Guttenberg, Elkader and Galena, Illinois.

“If you build it, they will come, because there isn't much of a choice.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2011

My spouse and I stayed here as did our friends. We were in Dyersville to visit friends and of course we checked out the Field of Dreams movie site it was maybe a five minute drive from the hotel. Dyersville is a quiet, lovely little farm town and I was pleased with the visit. The type of place where you sit on someone's porch and everyone waves at each other and is friendly.

I didn't totally get that vibe at the Comfort Inn. It wasn't bad, but after spending the day in the town checking out the shops and hanging out with friends, I figured I'd get a fantastic display of customer service. Jenny checked us in around 7pm Saturday night. There were about five people checking in all together so she was a little busy. We were the last of the bunch and she answered some questions we had and was nice and gave us a map. The small thing the irked me a bit was she had a friend with an infant standing at the desk waiting for her to finish checking people in, and so I feel rushed in those types of situations, so they can get back to their conversation. The lobby was nice and clean, and the halls were the same. It wasn't the least bit worn down.

The room was very basic, exactly what you'd expect at a Comfort Inn. The room seemed clean and the bedbug check was fine - as a matter of fact, the mattress cover seemed new, which I don't get very often when I do my routine bedbug check. The TV was the older tube style, no biggie since we didn't really watch any TV. The two downers were that the room was cool, but never quite seemed to be cool enough. It felt humid and the carpet felt wet and sticky. Otherwise, room was sufficient to sleep in for a night. We left about a half hour later and didn't get back until about 10.20pm. The pool closed at 11pm - they have a very decent pool and hot tub, and I wanted to take part in that. I got up to the room and called Jenny to ask when the Subway just across the way closed - we'd eaten a lot of party food and had alcohol and wanted something light with an actual vegetable in it. She said 11pm. I told her I really wanted to sit in the hot tub for a bit before bed but I'd better run over to Subway first. So I did. It's just across the parking lot. By the way, they closed at midnight on Saturdays. Ugh. I walked into the lobby with my veggie sub at exactly 10.40pm. Jenny was just walking from the pool area. She said, "Oh, did you want to use the pool?" I said, "Well, not if you already closed it.." She said, "Yeah, I just did". I was really irked about this as she knew what my plan was. I had enough time to take five minutes to put my suit on and sit in the tub for 10 or 15 minutes and I feel like she did this on purpose. I would have left at 11pm.

In the morning, the girls at the desk were nice, both wearing flip flops which I felt was a little too casual for a front desk, but maybe that's the norm for Dyersville. I got a cup of coffee at the continental breakfast. We were set to have breakfast away from the hotel, but from what I saw, there were hard boiled eggs and some other hot items. All in all, a decent stay considering we didn't spend a whole lot of time in the room. But I felt it was a little overpriced for a Comfort Inn...but maybe the movie site allows them to charge a little more than usual.

“If you build it, they will come”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2011

We were on a bucket list day to go to Field of Dreams and needed a convenient place to stay. Not knowing anything about the area surrounding Field of Dreams, I picked the Comfort Inn in Dyersville and was glad I did. If you are coming from the west, this hotel/town is very convenient. Field of Dreams is only a couple miles away. If you stay in Dubuque, you will have to come back 23 miles. The hotel was up to the usual Comfort Inn standards. We had a spacious room and a solid breakfast in the morning before we left. The front desk staff was knowledgeable and very friendly. We did two loads of laundry which is always nice while traveling for a couple weeks and did not get robbed. I believe the soap, wash and dry for two loads was $5.00. There is an indoor pool right off of the front lobby that seemed to be heavily used while we were there.

“Grit your teeth and take it”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2011

I can't fault the facility much, as it's clean and in good repair. It's just the personnel and the policies that leave a bad taste in my mouth. In previous trips to this area, I'd stayed in Dubuque and will do that in the future even if it's an extra 30 minute drive.

There's a great drag strip a few miles down the road from the motel. Those people work very hard at promoting their special races and in bringing in people from all over the country. Unfortunately, the Comfort Inn is ready as they jack up the rates considerably during those weekends. Capitalism is fine, but greed is always ugly.

Don't get too excited about the advertised hot breakfast. If you want to make yourself a waffle or warm up a pre-packaged bagel you'll have a hot start to your day. But it's not like a Hampton with actual hot food someone has cooked.

The front desk woman was about as surly as possible without actually cursing me out loud. When my key stopped working halfway through my stay, I had to walk th length of the hotel twice in order to get a working one. I'm disabled and that's a hard thing for me to do. When I asked the woman what had happened, she shrugged and said "they do that". No apologies of any kind. I think that would have been all I needed at the time. In addition, the handicapped parking was in odd locations and there were no carts, etc. to help with luggage.

As others have mentioned, the Country Inn restaurant across the street is very good.

In a nutshell, for $130 a night you can do much, much better.
