“Better than expected”

After reading the reviews on TripAdvisor, I was hesitant to really spend money here. We decided to take the hour drive from home as a last minute weekend get away for myself, my husband and my 2 boys 13 & 10.

I had checked out the hotel website and found a package deal of hotel room with waterpark tickets and National Mississippi River Museum tickets for 4 for a discounted price. There was no mention that this offer was limited to a certain number. When I called, I was informed that that rate package was sold out. I inquired how many of those they sold and was told that she didn't have any idea. Okay...? Needless to say I spent full-price for the room with no added anything.

The hotel is not that old, but it looked older than it's actual age. It's definitely showing its wear. The room we had was clean, which was good considering everything I had heard about dirty rooms. And believe me I did a top to bottom inspection. The beds were also showing their age, and the tv's where the CRT type tv's - which we thought was odd considering that most hotels now have flat screen high def. (Not that it matters, but I think it shows it's age and lack of recent updates.)

The waterpark was ok. My oldest was a little bored, but my 10 year old had a lot of fun. The waterpark pool areas are showing their age too. Lots of rusty areas and I've read that they will be doing some maintenance soon. You can imagine the amount of water going through there would lead to lots of rust and up keep.

We did eat at the restaurant inside the hotel - Tony Roma's. It was good. It was busy and the food took a while to get to us, but they kept our drinks coming and the appetizers arrived at the appropriate time, which is good. We hate when you order an appetizer and it shows up just minutes before the main course. We had a nice relaxing dinner. I think the cost was average to a a higher end chain. Not the cheapest meal, but what I would expect to pay for a nicer sit-down restaurant. I would recommend them, but would not go out of my way to get there just to eat.

Bottom line- Stay if you can get a good discount or deal. Stay if you are planning a location where you can visit the museum, casino, and the Mississippi river all within walking distance. Waterpark is better than some, not as good as some. Probably not a big thrill for older kids, but a nice distraction for a short time. Would I go back? Only if I can get the package deal.

Room Tip: Don't expect a 5 star room. More like a 3 star. Simple and basic, no frills.

“Bad value for lousy service”

The overpriced rooms were filthy from the pubic hair in the sink, soap scum in the shower and stains in the sheets to the scraps of garbage coming out from under the furniture, sticky hand printed windows and worn out carpet... and that was before we made it to the broken down waterpark. 2 of the 3 big waterslides were broken as well as most of the other parts of the "main attraction" of the waterpark. If you stay here, you will be paying too much for the filthy room and you might want to bring some lysol wipes and don't take your shoes off.
When I advised the staff of my disappointment, they indicated that it was my fault.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else

Dear Fireman1776,

Thank you for your comments on your recent stay with us. My sincere appologies that we did not meet your expectations. Unfortunately our water slides were broke for one day in January do to an unforseen motor failure and the parts were not readily available. As for your other experiences we would like to discuss them further with you at your convenience. I am please to announce that the hotel is scheduled for a full renovation which address some of your concerns. Thank you again for your feedback.

“Disappointed”

We decided to take our children here as a last minute decision for a fun night out of the house. Have been here several times and have loved it, however this time were very disappointed. We called on Saturday morning for a reservation, only to get there and get dressed for the waterpark to find out the two body slides were broken! Why weren't we told this when we made the reservation or at least when we were checking in, probably wouldn't have choosen to stay. So there was only 1 slide open for our 8 year old son. The water was freezing cold! The play structure was really worn with lots of rust. Lots of the play features on the structure were broken. The bell that usually rings before the bucket dumps didn't work either. The rooms smelled like smoke and sheets were rough. There were a lot of tubes that were flat in the waterpark and the water was dirty and had sand in it in places. Complained to the front desk and they didn't seem to care. This was a great place to go for the weekend, but has really gone down hill in the last year. Will be looking for a new place to stay next time!

Dear mom3120,

Thank you for your comments regarding your January stay. Unfortunately you are correct. On Saturday January 7, 2012 our treehouse water slide pump motor stopped working upon opening the water park that day. First and foremost we exhausted all efforts that morning to get the slide up and running but eventually found out it was going to take parts that were not readily available. The hotel then posted signs that we were going to be shut down for that particular structure but to alert 700 arriving guests prior to their arrival was not possilbe. It was unfortunate but unavoidable nonetheless. As far as the other parts of the water park, there are visiible signs of surface rust do to the amount of running water and we will be addressing these issues in the very near future when business demands slow down enough for us to close the water park for enough time to properly correct those concerns. Thank you again for your comments.

“Lots of fun for the family, but the rooms were dirty”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

Should be 2 1/2. I felt the price was great. We got a great deal with the hotel stay, waterpark passes, and museum passes. We arrived around 11 a.m. and we were able to check in right away...which was a huge plus! The hotel is within walking distance to the museum, although we walked since it was kind of cold outside. The waterpark was okay. We've been to much nicer waterparks, but the kids still enjoyed it. Two of the slides were broken, so that was a drawback. It also looked to be quite worn with rust and water stains all over, but I guess that's to be expected in a waterpark...? The arcade was lots of fun for the kids.

The major complaint is that the room was very dirty. It was just deep-down dirty. In addition, there were strands of long, black hair all over the bathroom (not our hair). The floor in the room was very dirty too and we found a tootsie roll and a gumball laying on the ground (actually my son found the gumball)...this could have been potentially dangerous considering we have a 1 year old and both could have been choking hazards!

“great place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

I read some of the reviews about the customer service here, and I completly disagree we spent one night here with 6 kids and 2 adults (brave) and the rooms were nice we did have some gum stuck to our floor but its a hotel based off kids what can you expect? The rooms were clean and didnt smell at all. The man behind the desk at the front door was extremly helpful with us finding a place to eat because the built in restraunt was out of our budget and serves steak and ribs, so we ordered pizza from dominos and we were able to eat the pizza in the arcade where they had a couple of tables set up. I didn't have any of the "horrible" experiences some of these people claim to have had, our trip went great and we are from close by Davenport. We also brought snacks and soda for the kids and they have small refrigerators and microwaves for your unlimited use lol. Its not the Kalahari but it is really nice!!! GO HAWKEYES!!!!!!
