After reading the reviews on TripAdvisor, I was hesitant to really spend money here. We decided to take the hour drive from home as a last minute weekend get away for myself, my husband and my 2 boys 13 & 10.
I had checked out the hotel website and found a package deal of hotel room with waterpark tickets and National Mississippi River Museum tickets for 4 for a discounted price. There was no mention that this offer was limited to a certain number. When I called, I was informed that that rate package was sold out. I inquired how many of those they sold and was told that she didn't have any idea. Okay...? Needless to say I spent full-price for the room with no added anything.
The hotel is not that old, but it looked older than it's actual age. It's definitely showing its wear. The room we had was clean, which was good considering everything I had heard about dirty rooms. And believe me I did a top to bottom inspection. The beds were also showing their age, and the tv's where the CRT type tv's - which we thought was odd considering that most hotels now have flat screen high def. (Not that it matters, but I think it shows it's age and lack of recent updates.)
The waterpark was ok. My oldest was a little bored, but my 10 year old had a lot of fun. The waterpark pool areas are showing their age too. Lots of rusty areas and I've read that they will be doing some maintenance soon. You can imagine the amount of water going through there would lead to lots of rust and up keep.
We did eat at the restaurant inside the hotel - Tony Roma's. It was good. It was busy and the food took a while to get to us, but they kept our drinks coming and the appetizers arrived at the appropriate time, which is good. We hate when you order an appetizer and it shows up just minutes before the main course. We had a nice relaxing dinner. I think the cost was average to a a higher end chain. Not the cheapest meal, but what I would expect to pay for a nicer sit-down restaurant. I would recommend them, but would not go out of my way to get there just to eat.
Bottom line- Stay if you can get a good discount or deal. Stay if you are planning a location where you can visit the museum, casino, and the Mississippi river all within walking distance. Waterpark is better than some, not as good as some. Probably not a big thrill for older kids, but a nice distraction for a short time. Would I go back? Only if I can get the package deal.
