“Very thin walls, poor customer service”

The people in the room directly above ours had a very loud argument for about 3 straight hours. We called the front desk 3 times to complain. The third time we asked the hotel to call the police because it sounded like the woman upstairs was thrown into the wall. The police came and the people upstairs quieted down. It is not the hotel's fault that the people were fighting. The main problem I have is that when I spoke to the manager, Sonny, he offered to send me a 50% off coupon good for any America's Best Inn nationwide, and then reneged on his promise. He ended up mailing me a 25% off coupon good only in Dubuque. I called Sonny back, but he gave me the run-around, said I would only be getting the 25% off coupon, thank you, and that was it.
I recommend staying somewhere else if possible.

“This hotel needs some work”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2007

This hotel was definately a "get what you pay for" deal. We only stayed one night so it served it's purpose - if we were staying any longer than that, there's no way this motel would've worked out. The rooms are small, verrrrry small, clostrophobic small. Again, if you are value-minded then this could work for you. The room was clean, tv and remote worked good, lots of channels to surf. There was a small packet of shampoo and bar of soap in the tub but no hand soap for the sink. The towels felt like sandpaper - I actually hurt my face when drying it off. The bed was comfortable but the pillows were flat so bring your own pillows! The structural condition of the room & furniture showed LOTS of wear. We usually go value-minded when looking for motels since we travel as much as we can and usually go for more reputable branded motel names but thought we'd give this a try. Now we know why we stick with the Ramadas and Holiday Inns. BUT the breakfast the next morning almost made it all worth while. It was the usual continental breakfast but you can make your own freshly cooked belgium waffles which were OUT OF THIS WORLD. I could've stayed and ate them all day lol. They were so delicious. So, not trying to sound like a complainer or whiner on this review - just letting you know what we experienced.

  • Liked — The comp'd fresh belgium waffles.
  • Disliked — The size & condition (old room, scratched furniture, etc.) of the room.

“Good place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2007

We made reservations for three rooms, as three guys were making a run on motorcycles and wanted our own rooms.

We arrived at America’s Best, to find there was an error with our reservation, we were set for the following night. After producing confirmation numbers we then got rooms for the night we needed. As we walked out of the office another couple asked if we had problems, as they had the same issues also. So double, if not triple check your arrival date.

All three rooms were clean and had clean linens. Being we are on motorcycles, we wanted to be able to keep an eye on our investment throughout the night. We voiced that concern when we checked in, and we got ground floor rooms, all in a row.

There was an outdoor pool, but we did not use it, it appeared to be clean as we walked buy it to got to eat at the Mexican place next door. For a $50.00 a night hotel, all three of us were very impressed. There even was a small continental breakfest. I would visit here again.

“not too clean”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2007

The hotel was easy located on route 20. My boyfriend took me there for my b-day with my little puppy. The carpet of the room was dirty; there were many dark spots on the carpet floor, (not sure if they gave us that room because we registered our puppy) and everything else was old and out of date. I have no problem with old things as long as they work properly but I have a big issue with things being dirty......you can be poor and still be clean.

“Fine for the money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2006

This was the only motel I could find in Dubuque that offered for about $50 (through Expedia) 2 double beds per room. For this price, the room was fine -- small but big enough to fit 2 double beds with firm but fairly comfortable mattresses, reading lamp over each bed, a color TV with remote, a desk/chest plus chair, a wardrobe hanger and suitcase rack, and a plain but adequate bathroom.

For this price, don't expect fancy extras like toiletries (only soap and shampoo offered), hair dryers, coffee makers, robes.

The room was clean, and it was easy to control the temperature with a digital readout heater/AC unit. (Not all rooms have this digital version installed).

The maid did a good job cleaning up each day.

The free breakfast is more than adequate -- a bonus for the price. (It included waffles, made with a do-it-yourself machine, donuts, cereal, milk, coffee, apple sauce, and fruit.)

The clerks were friendly and helpful.

Note: the motel is located on US Hwy 20 in a strip of motels and other commercial properties, about a mile or so west of the city of Dubuque, an old river town well worth exploring (architecture is fantastic, and the new river museum is well worth the $10 admission). The Mexican restaurant next door to the motel (Los Aztecas) was good: it has a big, tasty menu and is very popular with locals.

  • Liked — The price, the cleanliness
  • Disliked — The smallness of the room
