If you are the type that likes spas, fitness centers, turn-down service, etc- the Canfield is NOT for you. If you appreciate a fun, unique atmosphere with local character you will be just fine. This is an old place with a lot of history. It was one of the cheapest places in town for the weekend. Many "long term" residents here- folks down on their luck, out of work, etc. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and polite and we did not feel threatened or uncomfortable once. Front desk staff was decent enough, not overly friendly, but not fake-which we like. People- remember if YOU are nice, usually you will get it back. If you have a complaint about your room kindly explain it to staff and they will deal with it. If you are rude and condescending- you will get attitude back. It's a no brainer! Hotel location is excellent, great food across the street at the Sunshine Cafe. Minutes walk to casino and interesting sites downtown. Yes the elevator smelled a bit funky, but it's an old building! Our room was interesting. Kitchenette with fridge and micro, sitting area with loveseat (old and worn) and coffee table, table and two chairs, double bed (uncomfortable and dipped in the middle, but clean and bug free) small tube TV with remote, sink and vanity outside of bathroom. Now the shower/tiolet room....LOL we got a chuckle out of this! You had to stand in the shower to close the door, and step over the toilet to get out of shower. It was SO tiny! Water didnt drain well either, but we dealt with it for the weekend just fine. The windows in the room opened so that was nice to have the fresh air. All in all The Canfield was a very interesting place to visit! The bar/karaoke lounge on the first floor was fun as well. If you are not high maintenance and want an experience to remember- come to The Canfield! We shall return.
