The Canfield is interesting! If you are looking for the same old, bland, boring hotel, stay away.
The place just exudes character out of every nook and cranny. I've stayed there twice with groups of billiard players in town for a yearly tournament. Each room seems to have its own decor. One room had macrame keys all over, another tons of birds and owls, yet another had a slight Egyptian feel with cats. It has a very vintage look, mostly because, it is vintage. Not much has been updated in decades. It's a real place, not some fake everything-is-the-same run of the mill hotel. There is a karaoke lounge on the first floor, with some interesting characters of it's own in the locals hanging out there. Even the wooden Indians sitting on the bench in the lobby give the place a slightly creepy but fun vibe. I highly recommend this place for someone looking for something not boring, and out of the 40's (or 70's).
While the shower is horrible for someone of my height (6'3"), I can manage bending backwards for a bit to wash my hair. A little stretching never hurt anyone I suppose. Cool place. The beds are very small, and not very comfortable, but I did get some sleep. If you are on the upper floors, I didn't hear much commotion, but I'd imagine if on the 2nd floor the lounge might be noisy. There's a great little cafe across the street for breakfast.
