“If I could give it 0 I would”

Never have I ever stayed at such an awful hotel. I travel regularly for business so i have plenty to compare to. The rooms are extremely outdated, the carpet, paint and bathroom has not been touched in decades. Thankfully I travel with flip flops so I didn't have to touch the carpet or tile. Not to mention the shower head isnt tall enough for anyone over 5 feet. The rooms smell musty and moldy. Paint is chipping off the walls. It's a surprise this hotel is still open and hasn't been condemned.

“Remodeling badly needed”

If you don't mind dirty carpet, caulk that has dirt ground in it, dirty windows that can't open and no full length to get dressed with, This will be the ticket!! The toliet has no lid, and has the flushing handle that looks like that of a toliet in Target. Gee Whiz!
I wouldn't suggest it, spend a little more somewhere else.
Suggestion to the hotel, start remodeling from the first floor up. Maybe the hotel could get in on some kind of government fund for revitalizing "Grandma's Attic".

“Stay somewhere else”

Stayed here last weekend, was a surprise trip from my girlfriend (we are older and I have done business travel for years so I do have something to compare to). The parking was easy to find although you had to pay, even on the weekends and no signs to the free lots. Main floor was really nice, although we did not spend much time in it. The room had peeling paint, the walls were paper thin and we could here everything going on next door. We had a corner room thankfully so we did not have stereo conversation to hear. The room had a radiator for heat and was not working. We called the front desk at 10pm when we returned from a dinner and it took 3 calls and an hour later to get a portable space heater delivered (apprently the maid was unreachable and then had to clean the employee break room first), yes great customer service. The irony was the space heater was labeled with a #10, so this must be a theme. We were given a small refund for the heat issue, but we will not be returning to this hotel.

Room Tip: spend th eextra $10 to stay elsewhere

“Great Surprise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

I stayed a the Hotel Fort des Moines due to the reasonable rate, however upon entry into the lobby, I was instantly satisfyed, as I enjoy, respect, appreciate and relish in the historic value of buildings. I have read some of the reviews, and if you are looking for a cookie cutter hotel, this is not it! . The Hotel Fort des Moines is full of character, from the lobby, the door handles, crown molding, octogon tiles, and the crown molding. I have noticed that they are doing some renovations, I hope they are planning on restoring (pictures of the hotel in its previous state are amazing! Especially the lobby.) and not falling victim to the "little boxes" built today.

“Slightly frayed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2011

The Hotel Fort DM in downtown is a once glorious hotel of the Roaring 20's, which has welcomed a dozen presidents, but it has become worn here and there. Some of the usual amenities are no longer available (the pool is closed), or they are limited (restaurants), but there are still convenient appointments in rooms--but I paid too much. Still, it is a very pleasant place to stay. The staff is courteous and helpful, rooms are clean, (my room was very large--approx 400 sq. feet). A shuttle van is available for airport or downtown service. I would stay here again. Staff tell me the hotel will shut down in March of 2012 for a complete 18 month renovation. Beware, downtown is a ghost town on weekends, with fewer open restaurants on Sunday.
