This hotel was booked for me due to unavailability at the neighboring Holiday Inn, where I was conducting a class. I stay in hotels at least 5 times a year for several days at a time; some years I stay in as many as a dozen or more. Types have ranged from hostels to Hiltons; I tend to be most partial to the mid-range hotels, as they provide good amenities at a decent price.
In the past 20 years of traveling, I have only stayed in two places as grubby, dingy, or dismal as this place; a hostel in the heart of Dublin, which had mold growing in the shower and dirty carpet, and a roach-ridden extended stay on the wrong side of the tracks in scenic East Lansing, MI. Both of these were at least less overpriced.
My room was poorly lit with thoroughly unpleasant lighting, which unfortunately couldn't disguise the presence of deep rust on every metallic surface, including the doorframe to the bathroom. It also couldn't hide the filth encrusting the light switches and phone, the stray hairs on the sink, the dingy, dishwater-gray lining of the bedspread, the cheap, paper-thin sheets (which, based on the loose weave, looked like about 80 thread count), the mismatched furniture, the stains on the walls and doors, and the giant mosquito which seemed determined to make this cesspit its home.
The room wasn't just visually repellant, either: it appalled all the senses. It had a fuggy reek of dampness, sweat, and some sort of decaying matter. It seems likely this emanates from the carpet, which felt revoltingly dank and sticky. Normally, I prefer to go shoeless when I can; in this pit, I put my shoes on every time I had to come in contact with the floor.
The bed seemed to be made entirely of mismatched springs, with no padding over the tops at all, and after the disgusting sensation of the carpet, I could barely bring myself to lie on it for thinking about the likelihood that it was equally unclean. As if the physical discomfort wasn't enough, there was also the noise from neighboring rooms, the plumbing, and the parking lot, which seemed to be a gathering ground for a pack of young adults.
If I could have given this a lower rating, I would have. The only real perk of this hotel seemed to be the wireless access. Since this is now available for free even at rest stops, this particular benefit is no longer significant. Frankly, if I hadn't had to work in the immediate area, I'd have demanded a refund and slept in my car; it would certainly have been quieter, cleaner, and more comfortable. I didn't feel clean until I'd gotten home and scrubbed myself from head to foot.
If this is representative of Super 8's quality, I will certainly never stay in any of their chain again. I found myself wishing constantly that I had brought my camera, because it's so hard to believe you'd find this poor quality in a mid-range hotel. As it is, we'll just hope prospective visitors will be fairly forewarned.
