I guess the best way to start this review is to say that the Heartland Inn is not for the professional, white-collar business traveler, it's just not. I think this place would be fine for those small-business travelers (like the reviewer that mentioned the antique show), low-budget vacationers / road-trippers, or lower-income families that need a lot of 'bang for the buck'.
The Heartland Inn gives you a very dated appearance the moment you walk through the front door. They don't rely much on computers, so a good portion of the check-in process will require you to manually enter information on paper forms.
I was given my room, which was actually rather sizable. It was relatively clean - I felt comfortable taking off my shoes, etc. but certainly nothing special. Furniture was very dated with dark, shaggy carpeting. There was no closet although a clothes rack was attached to the wall. On an interesting note, my room did have two reclining lounge chairs. Honest-to-God bark-o-lounger style. I've never seen that before in a hotel room - let alone two! They were in good condition, although very similar to what you might see at an elderly person's garage sale. The bed was a bit firm, although I had no problems getting a good night sleep.
The bathroom again was dated although clean and useable. One interesting feature of the hotel is a small buffet with a rotating menu each evening. One night was taco night and a number of the guests, especially those with kids decided to take advantage. I can't fault that considering it was complimentary. Kudos to the staff for the very good chocolate chip cookies. I guess it is a good option considering there is no room service available, although there are several vending machines.
Alas, the cookies wouldn't be enough to bring me back. The Heartland Inn really is targeted more toward those travelers that stay at Motel 6, Sleep Inn and the like. If that's you, then this is a great option. For business travelers that are used to the Starwood / Marriott / Hyatt brands, I wouldn't recommend much consideration here.
