“Second time staying here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

This month was the second time I stayed at this HIE. Burlington is small so there is not much variety, but I would have picked this place no matter if there were more choices. I was on the back of the building and was not bothered by any noise behind us. I always take a white noise machine, so that helps no matter where I stay. I have found this HIE to be (usually) quiet and very convenient. It is clean and well maintained, I had almost no problems with the hotel at all. I don't like the CFC lights by the beds (and in other places) but I guess all hotels are doing that now.

The place was mostly booked up with guys who are working on the railroad bridge across the river. They were great-I guess they work all day and then come in and go right to sleep. They were quiet.

On the other hand, do people with children not understand they are disturbing other people when they let their kids run wild in the halls and the room? The last night I was stuck beside some family whose kids evidently thought the halls and room were a playroom. I'm so tired of staying in a hotel and having to listen to noisy kids, in and out the door and slamming against the walls and hollering.

One gripe-the breakfast area is nice, and the food is fine. But for goodness sakes, why in the morning was the TV always on some "urban" sit-com blasting at high volume? Why not put it on the Weather Channel or an all news channel? It happened several mornings I was there, and is really annoying.

I'll be back to Iowa and I will stay here again.

“Ask for a room at the front of the hotel!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights (31st Aug -2nd Sept 2011). Right behind the hotel is a factory with very loud and high-pitched fans that run all night. On the first night we asked at the front desk if we could change rooms, but they said the hotel was full, and couldn't move us till the following day. No sleep at all that night. Despite the Hospitality Promise (if you are unhappy with any part of your stay, you won't pay for that part) displayed in the room, they said they couldn't give us a refund for the first night as we had prepaid. Told us to contact HI cutomer services, which we did on our return - they refused to give us a refund too, and just offered us 4000 points towards another night. Otherwise hotel was ok. If you do decide to stay here, just make sure you ask for a room at the front of the hotel if you want any sleep!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel!

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at our hotel. I do apologize for the restless nights sleep due to the factory behind our hotel. On evenings we are sold out we do our best to accommodate everyone the best we can.
I am sorry that you did not feel the additional Priority Club Points were beneficial to you. Upon your next return to Burlington, Iowa I would like to offer you an upgraded Suite at the front of the hotel at a discounted rate. We look forward to accommodating you again soon. Enjoy your day~

“Don't book here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

I needed to go to Burlington for a business meeting on late notice. I booked online Friday afternoon to get a room Sunday night. Got an email Saturday at 1:00 p.m. informing me that the meeting was cancelled. I immediately called to cancel my reservation.

At the end of the process, the desk person told me that I'd still be charged. I told her I didn't think that was a good idea, since I'd called 24 hours before check in time. She told me that she couldn't refund it because I'd booked online, and that the "fine print" when you book covers this policy. I asked to speak to a manager (who wasn't in). We'll see if he actually calls me.

I travel a lot for business. I won't be going back to Holiday Inn/Renaissance properties because I don't want to deal with a place that relies on the "fine print" to screw people when there's no need (I doubt the Burlington Holiday Inn Express is at capacity for Sunday night). Pretty crappy policy for the hospitality business.

“friendly, updated and convenient”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

Recently stayed for 3 nights while attending family reunion. My wife is handicapped and they put us in a first floor handicapped room. This room was completely remodled with all of the latest amenities and very comfortable. This will definitely be my new home in Burlington when visiting my family.
