“A gem of a B&B in the making”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2007

When I first tried to make a reservation online, I waited several days for a response before deciding to call. No need to worry, my reservation was secure.... they were just backed up with their e-mail correspondence??? This was my introduction to Sycamore Farms, a gem of a B&B in the making that's still a bit rough around the edges.

Arriving around 6 on a Tuesday evening, we were a bit surprised to see all of the activity about the barn and in the house. After introducing ourselves and asking if they were expecting us, we learned that we were indeed expected, but that they were hosting two separate dinners that evening.... one in the downstairs area of the house and the other in the barn. After taking our overnight bag up to the room, we decided to drive over to see our daughter a bit earlier than planned and vacate the premises. All was well by the time we returned around 9 and we had the place to ourselves for the rest of the evening.

Breakfast the next morning was served in the Sun Room, promptly at 8:30 as promised and it was delicious! After finishing, we went out for a walk along the National Road Heritage Trail and returned to our room about 11. After cleaning up a bit, we went downstairs and observed that no one had yet arrived for the daily lunch.... so we inquired if it would be appropriate to bring our daughter and new grandbaby over for lunch. The response was affirmative and again the food was delicious.

After spending the rest of the day with our family members, we returned to Sycamore Farms to retire. Unfortunately Mother Nature decided to put on a sound & light show during the night and we awoke to find that the power was out. After locating a couple of flashlight/nightlights that were wisely located in each room, we dressed and began packing up to leave. The young chef who was to serve us breakfast made his way upstairs by candlelight to check on us and explained that he could go out for rolls, etc. but that the kitchen was down. We asked instead if he could just take something off the bill for the last night, which he graciously did.

In summary, the rooms at Sycamore Farms are lovely. Access to the Sunrise and Sunset rooms is gained by ascending the main stairway. The Hideaway and Master Room, which we occupied, are reached by a narrow back staircase where the footing is far more treacherous. All in all we enjoyed our stay and will return again when we next visit our daughter for further adventures at Sycamore Farms.

  • Liked — The flexibility of the staff in trying to accommodate us during our visit.
  • Disliked — Occasional group dinners could force overnight guests to stay in their rooms until 9 or vacate the premises.

Thank you for the lovely review! We very much appreciate the helpful suggestions. For clarity, the main floor of the Farmhouse is a full service restaurant with regular restaurant hours called ButtonWoods. The Red Barn at Sycamore Farm is a banquet and meeting facility with regularly scheduled events. ButtonWoods at the Farm, The Red
Barn at Sycamore Farm, and the B&B all comprise Historic Sycamore Farm B&B Inn.

“Charming Tea Room B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 March 2007

Traveling on Hwy. 70 we wanted to stay in a bed and breakfast for the night and came upon this lovely place. The location was ideal, about two miles from the hwy. and situated between woods and an upscaled new subdivision. A large red barn set next to the house, being renovated for receptions. Guests rooms are upstairs and a tea room/restaurant for special occasions is on the main floor. We stayed
in the Master's room and found it to be very comfortable. We were unable to hook up with the wireless connection as advertised, and there wasn't a DVD player or any snacks provided. Breakfast was served in the sun room, bright and charming. The food was wonderful, all homemade, fresh eggs with turkey sausage, fresh fruit parfait, muffins, etc. The kitchen was amazing, all new stainless steel appliances. Quite impressive. The innkeeper, Marilyn, was very friendly and helpful. I wish the place were closer to my home, because I would go there for lunch often. It is a SLOW down place to be.
