“Comfy & convenient but make sure heater works”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2010

If you're doing anything on the Notre Dame campus, very hard to beat the Morris Inn for convenience. Well appointed rooms -- comfy bed, good coffee maker, flat screen TV -- and accommodating staff (got my check-out extended by three hours without extra charge).

But it's an old building and the heating system, if not original, has not been updated in a while. So thermostat control on the wall may or may not activate the heat in the hot-water unit by the window. Front desk guy did his best, but couldn't fix and I was in no mood to move. Maintenance guy came by at 8:45 and had it fixed within 15 minutes. To avoid potentially chilly nights, best to test the thermostat as soon as you check in.

“Charming room, fresh air and soft bed!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2010

I loved staying at this wonderful inn. The fresh October air from the windows that opened gave me sweet dreams. It is old fashioned and unique. The breakfast quesadilla is huge and delicious. I love that breakfast is made to order just for you including both juice and coffee. I also had the Fighting Irish breakfast, yum. As an alum, staying here is the closest you can get to being back at the dorms but your car is right outside the door for pursuing some serious shopping in South Bend. It was a lovely weekend. I was back for an Educator's conference and staying at the Morris Inn made the conference stress-free and enjoyable. Nice coffeemaker in the room and an alarm clock that lets you wake up to your favorite song on your IPOD. LOVED IT. I also appreciated the bellman who helped me out when I couldn't find my car keys. Thank you.

“Best Hotel for a Notre Dame Visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2010

I've stayed at the Morris Inn twice while travelling to Notre Dame for business, and I definitely recommend the hotel to anyone doing the same. It's on campus, which means I could walk to anywhere I needed to go. The property is a little quirky -- from Notre Dame logo'd carpeting to super-low tables and benches in the dressing room.

On the down side, the walls are paper-thin. I had to call the front desk and ask them to tell my neighbor to turn down their TV at 11:00 pm, but they did so promptly and the problem was resolved. Also, some of the rooms have connecting doors in the dressing rooms with an inch or two of space between the door and floor -- enough space to pass a tube of toothpaste through (I was travelling with the neighbor who wasn't playing their TV at top volume).

One other drawback-- the water tastes coppery, which I'm guessing is because the property is older and hence has older plumbing. The hotel provides complementary bottled water, so I recommend using that to brush your teeth.

There is a fantastic restaurant on the property called Sorin's. We were travelling with someone on a restricted diet, and the restaurant was very accomodating.

Overall very pleasant, with an experience that's more unique than you could have anywhere nearby.

“Very nice, don't expect too much”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2010

Pleasant but unremarkable inn. Because of location, by far the best option for visiting the university.
The staff was friendly, the bedroom was big enough. I liked the bathroom: good size and well appointed, though rather old fashioned.
The restaurant is first rate for breakfast (I recommend the bacon highly, the sausage not so much) and not bad for dinner. Be aware that they won't seat you after 8:30.

I had no trouble with noise. The bed was slightly too soft for my tastes, but nothing to complain about.

My one complaint is that my room, a clearly marked No Smoking room, smelled distinctly of old tobacco. As another reviewer mentions, the windows open, and I was able to air the place out sufficiently, but I'm not very sensitive, so if you're allergic or just hate that smell, you might have a problem here.

“Manager cancelled reservations without notification, beware!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2010

Reserved rooms for my group 3 weeks ahead, had confirmation phone calls and emails with Shannen [-], sales manager. Arrived that morning and was told that our reservations had been cancelled. Was informed that they had tried to contact me 3 days earlier but since they didn't reach me had let reservations go. I showed confirmation emails to front desk but was informed they were sold out and could do nothing. I had arranged a discounted rate and strongly suspect that rooms were resold for higher price. Fortunately the Hilton Garden Inn had availability which we found to be excellent and would highly recommend. Will never make reservations here again.
