We stayed at the Residence Inn on Niles Avenue, just one block off of Route 31. It was SO quiet. It is actually on the other side of the river and in a quiet, residential area. There is a walking trail for miles along the river, away from traffic, that goes for miles, and is lite in the evening. Niles Avenue was very quiet and the Inn is a quick distance to campus, restaurants, downtown South Bend, and the Tollroad without having any of that traffic, noise, hassle of the hotels on 31 or out by Grape Road. The hotel is set up with individual buildings, condo-like, with 6 or 12 units per building, which other reviewers have talked about the pros and cons. I think of the set up as positive. There is no interior hallway where screaming children run up and down. You have to get dressed anyway, so pick up breakfast right before you are ready to start out for the day. There was plenty of parking right next to the lobby, even though we walked. The room which we requested was on the ground floor with just one other door a few feet away from ours. I am unsure whether there were units next to ours as it was very quiet, and it was a sold out weekend. The bed was against the exterior wall so there was no noise from a neighbor banging dresser drawers closed while you are trying to sleep. In fact outside our windows were trees which surround the entire complex. And compared to the last stay I had at the Residence Inn Mishawaka, no bed bugs! Bonus!
The staff was overly friendly and helpful. From check-in, the manager's reception (Yum!), the staff that helped me to warm up with some hot chocolate, and the breakfast helpers that wisked away your dirty dishes, everyone was top notch!
