“So, So”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Pros: Good location, staff was friendly and helpful. Great fitness center.

Cons: See picture attached. If you "get" a river view room, you also "get" the road noise. Not sure what the other sides of the hotel are like, but river side is loud. Who knew there was a hotel in the US that still does not have wireless internet, but this is the one.

Room had not been vacuumed so I used a towel to brush away the remnants from the previous accupant. Beds were entirley too soft for (subjective, I understand).

Hopefully the promises of the new management regarding enovations will come to fruition. I'll hive them another shot next time I'm in town.

Room Tip: River view gets you the road noise.

“We will not stay again.”

Upon arrival, found our reservation had been given to someone else. As of yet, we do not know if we paid for someone else to stay here. We did get another room and, as a consolation, they gave us free parking. The room is small but the bed is comfortable. Internet is not wireless and it is not free! It will cost you $13and to hook up. Parking is another $9. The halls smelled funky enough that had our room smelled the same we would not have stayed. Room service was the only option avail due to the holiday a d it was sufficiently good to warrant a good rating. It is not immediately clear how to access the hotel from the parking garage and beware nonresidents. If you want to visit the college football hall of fame you are going to pay a higher admission fee. Who does that??? Let's hope the place we eat breakfast doesn't charge us nonresident prices.

“Wedding Group/ Block Review”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

We recently were married in downtown South Bend at the Century Center. For convenience to our guests, we chose (at the time South Bend Marriott, which moved over to) the Hilton Double Tree. We really wanted to show case the best that South Bend had to offer. We were mistaken. From the initial correspondence with the South Bend staff, it was a MESS.

The group coordinator, CM, took DAYS to return either calls or emails. From making sure the guests were provided the group rate (either by calling-in and mentioning the rate, or completing the reservation online) there were constant mix-ups and issues. Most of our guests paid varying rates. When the actual wedding weekend arrived, the front desk staff constantly failed to provide our guests with the assigned gift bags and water. (Dare I think the staff just wanted to keep them for themselves, or just pure incompetency?) We complained multiple times to staff and one issue after another would arise. While the staff was apologetic, they simply were unorganized. One of our bridal party members is a hotel group exec, and frankly, WE were embarrassed by the property.

As for the rooms, they are exactly what others mentioned- old. used. worn down. smelled like smoke. And that was one of the suites. What hotel does NOT have wireless service these days? I had to plug my laptop into a modem cord which was 15 inches.

Now we come to after the wedding and I'm still waiting for correspondence reply from the group coordinator, CM, in regards to the points we were promised when securing our block. Emailed her over 4 days ago, and still no response. Surprised? No, not at all.

Room Tip: No Wi-Fi. Unbelievable.

“Great Stay at the Doubletree”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

person found this review helpful

Recently stayed at the Hilton Doubletree in South Bend in late October. We were visiting our son and going to the ND/Navy game. We were able to book our room with points which was a great advantage due to the extremely high rates everywhere during game wkds. The hotel was very clean, close to campus ( a 5 minute drive). The room and bathroom were on the smaller side but very quiet and clean. The beds were very comfortable. I checked and rechecked about the smoking issue due to past reviews but never smelled smoke anywhere except for outside the hotel. The staff were all very nice and they have a very nice breakfast in the morning. They are starting renovations in the winter but we really enjoyed our stay here and would choose this first over other properties in the area if visiting again. The housekeeping manager (AJ I think) was very professional and helpful with making sure our room was allergy free and clean.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor

“Poor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2011

OK hotel - but not up to traditional Double Tree standards.
The property is old and didn't have the usual Double Tree decor.
The internet service in the rooms was wired (not wireless) - and was PAINFULLY slow.
A key is required to get in AND OUT of the parking structure. When I called the front desk - to let them know I was leaving and leaving the key in the room - I wished someone would of told me this. I had assumed you only needed the key to get in. So, I had to leave my car, go to the front desk and get another key, to get out of the parking structure. A little frustrating!
